Caring too much can intimidate people with opposing views, but I think not caring about anything is the worst, regardless of what your views would be if you did care.

Evil thrives where good people do nothing.

Okay, just to play 'Devil's Advocate' for a moment: "Why should I care about others when others don't care about me?"

Consider a hypothetical someone who was cast out by their family for political or religious reasons. 50 years later, their family runs into some financial straits and turns to the now-wealthy relative they had once cast out. Is that relative obligated to care about the family?

I care about you Fnord. I know we fight sometimes, but I actually like you. :)

As for your comparison to family issues, that's a lot like what our country went through during the Civil War and the Civil Rights movement. Our American brothers and sisters could not agree on anything and were fighting all the time while being very divided over politics. But eventually things calmed down and we became a family again.

Countries are a lot like families. They have fights and sometimes they patch things up like we did, and sometimes they never patch things up and they split apart forever never letting go of grudges. I think the later is pretty sad, but it happens.

Thanks, T...

I think it's not so much a matter of grudge-holding as it is a lack of emotional investment. I mean, if someone was always there for you whenever you had a setback -- and I mean a hand-up, not a hand-out -- wouldn't you feel inclined to be there for them when they had a setback?

True indeed. My mom's family were pretty sh***y to us so I have nothing to do with them or my dad's family who abandoned me.

But my loyalties are to my mom and my brothers and sister and now my baby neice. Despite my mom's issues at least she's been there to take care if me.

I guess in a way that's how I feel about Georgia. Georgia is not a perfect state, but I'd rather live there than anywhere else because it's like my mother.

That's why this thing with the abortion laws and Hollywood's boycott pisses me off so much. I feel that their boycott is not going to help Georgia women at all and they know it, it's just going to make things worse for them actually. I'm all for women's rights but don't go making things harder for the people in my state by putting them out of work and trying to ruin our economy!

I mean seriously, f**k Hollywood!

It's not that you don't "care"

It's that you don't have the skill or authority to repair the problem

So you might as well, waste your time and energy and $$$$$, on something, you might have some efficiency over

Sir Fnord, you are a good man with great wisdom that you give to those who seek it. :)

As for this comparison to family issues, it is clear that if such a person finds great wealth, it would be ironic if that person's family begs for help years later. The outcast could consider many options including the obvious; one in particular being refusing to help as a means of getting revenge.

I don’t think that the relative is “obligated” to care about the family, but if I were that relative, I would do so because, to me, that would feel like the right moral course to take. I would feel guilty if I chose not to help them.

It would probably help if I was able to understand why they initially cast me out even if I didn’t agree with it and it hurt me at the time. I’ve experienced this and haven’t grudged my relatives for shunning me.

My good example could potentially make them regret past behavior and realize that they were wrong. I would help them no matter what, though, unless they were truly awful people.

Maybe I'm just a softie, but tbh even if it was a family member I absolutely hated and wanted to distance myself from I still wouldnt turn my back on them if they came to me begging for help because they really needed it. :|

I guess even though I can be a raving lunatic when triggered I'm just too nice to people? I must have a heart two sizes too big.
