#WEXIT: Western Canada separatism explodes on social media

Following the reelection of Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister with a Liberal minority, #Wexit, or Western exit (a play on Brexit), immediately began trending on Twitter, with separatist accounts gaining thousands of new followers.

One of the most important takeaways from the election is the blue sweep throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan. Both provinces have expressed growing indignation over the other provinces’ dependence on the oil industry, while simultaneously trying to stifle Alberta’s business prospects and economic growth by opposing pipelines.

People in Saskatchewan have expressed similar discontent, as many in the province benefit from the oil industry and Saskatchewan farmers in Canada’s heartland worry climate policies will target their economy next.

In response to Justin Trudeau’s reelection, the Facebook group for VoteWexit.com gained tens of thousands of followers in a matter of hours. According to CTV News, in just 10 minutes the group surged from 4,000 members to 42,000. By 8:00 a.m. the next morning, the group had shot up to over 113,000 members.

Additionally, a Change.org petition for “Alberta Separation/Western Alliance” has gained significant traction, receiving over 20.000 signatures of its 25,000 signature goal at the time of this article’s writing. This occurred in less than 24 hours.

New Canada idea: nuke alberta

we must get rid of alberta as soon as possible. my new novel idea involves nuking alberta to make sure it and it's inhabitants no longer exist

maybe i should take this to kickstarter. kickstarter backers of 50$ and more will receive a signed artbook containing anthropomorphised anime girl designs of the nukes along with ear cleaning ASMR audio files of said women. i just don't know why you wouldn't support this. unless, of course, you're an albertan...

i visited meta canada like an hour ago and it reinforced my conviction in my ingenious plan to fully erase alberta. i'm gonna be wearing traditional albertan clothes while sending thousands of icbms to completely erase all proof that alberta even existed

That’s weird in that the Liberals are red and the Conservatives are blue, the opposite of here.

Alberta has actually had officially social democratic government at the provincial level. This is more than can be said for Canada at the federal level.

Okay...so..now ALBERTA wants to break away?

And Quebec has ALWAYS wanted to break away?

Canada may look big on the map, but the entire nation only has a population size about equal to that of our one state of California. So the entire Canadian pie aint very big. Kinda silly to cut it all up in a bunch of pieces. Each piece is just gonna be a silly little crumb.

It’s a joke.

Kip has a complex, ironical sense of humor.

Kip, as far as I know, is not political at all.

Would I have to learn to like Moulson, hockey, and poutine, eh?

What do the colors on those maps mean?

I get that Blue is conservative and red is progressive (kinda the opposite of US convention).

But what does orange mean? And what does turquois mean?

i hear molsen golden is excellent brew, wish they sold molson in my neck o' the woods. and poutine is food of the gods.
i'd still rather be a canadian, even an albertan - than an amuuuurican, any day of the week. i wish western washington, oregon, california and BC could band together into a new country.

It's the other way around. Blue is bleeding-heart latte liberals and red is gun-totin', Bible-thumpin' conservatives.

Moderate left and moderate right, respectively.

We all just got through talking above about how its the OPPOSITE of the US convention. And I even said that again. in my above post.

IN CANADA blue is conservative, and red is progressive. Opposite of how we do it.

That's three times we have all explained it to you.

And on top of that ...if you looked at the map in the linked article you could see how the province in question (Alberta) is deep navy blue- that color because it votes conservative (or conservative by Canadian standards).

So that's- Tim Tex, Me, and Me again, and the map in the article, each saying the same thing.

So let me reiterate: In CANADA ...blue means conservative, and red means progressive. The opposite of how we Americans do it.

Is.. saying the same darn thing five times enough for you?

Or do you want us to make you write it on the blackboard a hundred times too?

To be honest every Canadian I ever met online was very rude to me. I don't think I'd ever want to live there.

Fire and Ice just doesn't mix.

My next door neighbour is Canadian. She is pleasant, affable and very helpful. But she is as nutty as a fruitcake.

I'm not assuming that all Canadians are like this.
