So ... after much discussion in another thread about "Woke" memes, I began to wonder how important it really is to be "Woke".

Some define it as "The act of being very pretentious about how much you care about a social issue" (Urban Dictionary).

Others define it as "A cultural push to challenge problematic norms, systemic injustices and the overall status quo through complete awareness" (Raven Cras).

Still others define it as "Alert to injustice in society, especially racism, sexism, and other forms of bigotry, whether expressed or implied" (A general aggregation of opinions).

What do you think? Is being "Woke" important, or is it just another meme-of-the-year?

You may select one option, and you may change your selection at any time.

Having been "woke" up repetitively and unnecessarily, to squabble about things that I already agree with, I find it worse than useless. I'm giving it a wide berth.

Understanding "Woke" probably requires cultural context that I lack.
People are aware of different issues including social but there is no trendy self-identity word or concept about it.

The word itself just sounds stupid.

Being "woke" is something that people usually attribute to themselves with no proper authority, exact context or evidence to support their claims therefore not relevant. Besides, whatever they think that makes them so aware of everything often borders the ludicrous and shows the other way around, the much they are blind to reality in general.

I attach very little importance to people being "woke."

I attach lots of importance to people having common sense.

I'm sure one can be honest and caring without self-identifying as "woke".

It's most likely all about getting money.

Climate change advocates say they need billions of dollars to research climate change.

Illegal immigration groups want money.

Quick search shows that Black Lives Matter got a 100 million dollar donation.

If you put it that way... I very much enjoy being asleep. 9 hours every night.

Being 'woke' from believing women exist only to cater to the desires of men is a good thing, but being 'woke' into believing that the U.S. government's alleged attempts to control the weather have led to global warming is bad.

"Unimportant, but worth knowing about"
Because it seems to be important to a lot of other people.

You can not understand a part of the American political scene without knowing about it.

Being aware and concerned about social injustice is a potential sign someone is a decent person.
Being hostile to concerns about social injustice is a strong indicator that someone isn't worth my time or consideration.

Can you name a single cause that doesn't want money? Of course, it's only problematic when it's groups you disagree with.

Eh, it's all a mixed bag for me.

On the one hand, it's good to acknowledge that there are elements of Western society that should not be (racism, sexism, general bigotry, ecological carelessness) and to work to change that. On the other hand, if you become so fanatical about said elements being changed that you feel like you must attack all others who do not share your worldview, are you any better than the racists and the sexists and the generally bigoted and the ecologically careless?

I feel like people try to be "woke" purely out of peer pressure or as a way to feel better about themselves. If they aren't putting their time and effort and yes, money into the causes they supposedly care so much about, what's even the point?

I think every youth generation likes to create ways of distinguishing itself from the one that went before.

My generation of youth (even I was young once!) did it with music - it was Elvis and Beatles and soul and rhythm and
blues for us, while our parents of time clung to music from their own youth.

The woke generation seem to be doing it with social media and language - eg memes and new meanings applied to old words.

My generation liked to think we were "hip". And many of us were, as ours was a musically gifted generation as many of us had music lessons from an early age, and were very attuned to music as performance, recreation and generational identity.

The current oncoming generation wants to shape itself as "woke" and maybe some of those are woke, or may become more so.

So I see parallels and the youngest generation can never understand the oldest generation, because they weren't there/born/woke for most of the oldest generation's time on the planet - though the reverse can occur. That's just how life is.
