"AmeriKa".

From what I have heard/seen, the health care system in Amerika is shocking and had been used in the last Australian erection to try and scare the constituents into voting against the conservatives.
since the conservatives won, are they making noises about doing away with universal care and replacing it with care only for the wealthy?

No, the left-wingers were scare-mongering.
It didn't happen after the Conservative Coalition won.
I live in Australia, not Amerika, thank god, err, me.

It's spelled Amerika in Afrikaans. (VSA=Verenigde State van Amerika)
Bit of a mouthful...
I'm not sure what needs to change there. They practically speak a different language! What we call scones they call biscuits, and what we call jam they call jelly!

As an outsider looking in, three distinct things come to mind.
1. Electoral reform. Get the corporate dollar out of your political system. Make it possible for other parties to rise to challenge the two. First past the post would have to go as well for ranked voting. Trump had to hitch his wagon to the Republicans because going independent would just have split the vote and handed victory to Hillary. Now Bloomberg has the same problem in reverse. I wouldn't mind getting rid of the electoral college too, but I think that should have a people's vote.
2. Sweeping police reform. The culture is all wrong, and it never seems to be addressed or even seen as a problem. Root and branch change is required. Your police are also ill trained compared to other first World countries, it should be the other way around with your police having generally more difficult duty with all the guns. The main problems are racism, cowardice, gross incompetence, authoritarianism and a general lack of respect and civility for the people they are serving. They treat people like it's the other way around. Also, they're not fit to hold themselves to account. All this must change. Surely there must be some forces in a country of 330 million that are examples to follow, but if not, draw from foreign examples.
3. The guns. This is tricky, and I wouldn't want to implement anything without the consent of the people. It might be something that has to come later, after electoral reform puts more faith in the government.
It's too late to ban guns. That genie is well and truly out of the bottle even if you wanted to. But I think there needs to be some sort of test, in similar style to how you must prove competent before you can get behind a wheel. It shouldn't be too much to ask. And you need to have proper records. If that building ever goes up in smoke where all the paper records for the whole nation are, you are f****d. Even if a few key staff were to die or otherwise disappear it would completely break the fragile system.

And when you say there's a robot at the end of your street, nobody knows WTF you're talking about unless perhaps you are all SF writers.

I’m going to be the fly in the ointment.
None of this is ever going to happen.
Why?
Because my generation (the boomers) have totally f!cked everything up beyond all recognition, to the point that we are no longer a representative democracy, but an authoritarian kakcopracy.
The country known as the United States of America is now so beyond hope it’s no longer saving.
Welcome to Mahagonny, where it is a capital offense to be poor, punishable by instantaneous death penalty.

It is spelt "Amerika" in Germany also.

I thought it was us self entitled Millenials who are to blame. Of course, you all are to blame for us, too.
Anyway, I don’t think things are THAT bad.
I also am for paternity leave - maybe 6 months.
Hi Sunshine.
I understand you parents have it tough,
But as a single guy all my life,
I am not happy having to support parents through my tax dollar all my working life.
Other people having children is not my responsibility. <shrug>
My immigrant parents never had the parental perks the recent generations have.
There seems to be an attitude of entitlement these days.
I guess they made "them" tougher 60 years ago after the war when they had virtually nothing but the clothes on their backs.
Different times.
Different attitudes.
This is not an attack on you.
I always enjoy your down-to-earth common sense opinions.
And I have always appreciated/valued the added intelligence and maturity you add to these forum discussions.
I simply have a different perspective in some areas.
It's a "Generation Gap" thingie.

None of this is ever going to happen.

A bit of this,
A bit of that,
Life is not binary, bubelah. <hug>

+100,000,000 for "kakcopracy"
Thank you for expanding my vocabulary.
For those who are thinking "huh...ummm what?"
Nevermind. If you have to ask the question... you will never understand the answer.

It's a government run by the least qualified individuals. Basicially a country under the control of selfish morons.
