The same species often comes in bigger varieties the farther north (in the northern hemisphere) its found, and the farther inland its found, because a bigger version of animal X will have less surface area relative to its body volume, and therefore will loose less body heat and therefor do better in a colder climate (farther north), or in a climate with more extreme temperature changes (away from the sea). Hot air is less dense than cold air so a bird would need a bigger airfoil to fly in warmer temperatures. So that all kinda makes sense.
