Solution to gerrymandering in the U.S.?

With all the talk about gerrymandering and redistricting, I have an idea:

Instead of numbering our congressional districts, we should use geographical identifiers, such as main cities and towns, or location within the state. The shape of the districts can change, especially if a state gains or loses a district, or if the population of the districts change, but they would be more or less anchored around the identifying cities or regions.

In the cases of states that only have one district, the district would be named after the state.

Could this work? Other countries, such as the U.K., do this.

Broadly, yes.

There are two barriers:

1) You need boundaries to be set independently, not by political groups.

2) I think there are some restrictions designed to protect black neighbourhoods. This isn’t insurmountable but will cause some distortion.

The utterly ridiculous gerrymandering you see in some states makes a mockery of American democracy.
