Metal detectors in public places

I have read where people have said that schools, malls, and movie theaters should not get metal detectors because they won't stop mass shootings. The gunman will just shoot the person at the metal detector first and then go on with their shooting spree. All that metal detectors will do is annoy customers having to walk through them.

I would need to see studies on it. In my opinion, any increase in safety would be worth minor inconveniences, especially where children are concerned.
