I ask this because if one can, technically I will be of mixed race origion, though so will many other people living here. I am actually considered an outsider by some of my local people because of this and can be given a hard time. Most people are decent though. Is just a few who bear a grudge because of what one race did to them many generations ago, even before our grandparents were young... What that has to do with me I have no idea!

My daughter is a South Asian mix and I suspect its another reason why she is struggling with finding friends and getting bullied in highschool. Its hard enough with autism but when you add race its yet another hurdle kids have to deal with.

It is possible for a person of mixed-race ancestry to "pass" for a specific non-mixed race.

I am white skinned and a mix between Anglo Saxon and Celt. There is also way back a royal connection via Norway I was told. I don't know a lot about that but my brother found it out that we are direct descendants of a Norwegian king. I expect the king has died by now. :D Was generations ago, and I know I have not been to Norway.
Funny what one learns. I have unusual ancestors from the owner of a well known chain of bakeries, to ultra rich New Zealand relations (Which I have not met but in the 1970's they wanted my parents to live with them as they needed help with the lobster industry they ran. I don't know how I am related), to connections with royalty in Britain on my Mums Mums side. (Not direct connections but indirect, and it was coach building connections with building a royal coach involved in it?). It is all rather wierd. Ooh. My great Grandfather was a designer and a coachbuilder, but this was on my Mums Dads side, and my Mums Dad was a designer who designed and built a few prototypes etc, some of which we see today in more modern forms.
But looking back it is strange. And here is me who is rather ordinary and nothing to show for it... Haha. Strange life isn't it.
Mind you, I guess everyone is related to everyone else somewhere down the line. One relative I can remember hearing about was said to have a model railway in his attic and he had modelled the entire London Underground system, which was quite someting in those days as there were no kits of Underground stock in those days. For some reason very few people were allowed to see it. I don't have a clue what happened to it after he died.
I wonder if my ancestors can look forward. I think I would be embarissed. "Is that all you have done?" I expect they would say! Or would they say "Wow! You did that?"
Who knows!

I might be racist because I am white and I might accidently say racist things in real life because when I try not to say something I accidently say it. I have a few black friends who.. Well. The strange thing is that because of faceblindness, I don't notice skin colour so much... But due to the discrimination laws is it best not to have black or other skin colour friends incase I say the wrong thing and accidently offend them? But I like them. They are lovely people. What should I do?
Oh I did that once to a passenger on a train I was working. It was a dark winters evening and an absolutely beautiful black skinned lady came onto my train. We rarely had people with black skin and I was admiring her skin colour as to this day, I have never seen someone who had such a dark skin colour. But then I had to go and check her train ticket, and as I was nurvous, I looked out the window to think of something to start a conversation and I said "It's a dark night out there". I tried to correct myself and I said "I mean black"... She was soo shocked and offended. But whatever I tried to say it all came out wrong. I said "I am sorry". When I left her I was holding my hand over my mouth so I would not talk.
I don't try to be racist. It just happens by accident.
My Dad was the same. We used to live in the village and as our house had land, we had lots of neighbours, and some new people had moved in and they were Germans. A gentleman and his Mum. Now my Mum invited them over and told my Dad "Whatever you say don't mention the war!" They came over and what were the first words my Dad said trying not to mention the war?"
"We don't hold the war against you!" My Dad was just like Bazil Fawlty in the TV program Fawlty Towers! Haha! But he could not help it. If my Mum had not mentioned it, it would not have been on his mind and it would not have slipped out!
Oh. Anothet thing my Dad did which was funny. My Mum would tell him off for swearing, so he decided to swear in German as he saw the old war films and learnt a German swear word. This was before the Germans moved next door to where we lived. Then after they moved my Dad was out in the garden and he did something which made him swear, and the elderly German lady said "What did you say?" My poor Dad didn't think! He was embarissed! Haha!

I thought Elizabeth Warren was a "pure breed" trying to pass for "mixed"? or do I have that wrong?

If you have two parents, each of different race you have generation's of DNA on both sides making the final cocktail that will be the egg in the overy.

Yes a child could look an number of ways, not always a perfect balance between two parents.
I'm not sure if that answers the question.

I think brictoria was being sarcastic.

I had a number of non-white friends (lost touch now) whom I never once thought about their ethnic background. For me (as an NT) how somebody connects with me is more important than their ethnicity or background.

Does being descendant count? I have Native American in my family, my Dad is Native and so was his father and his grandmother. My dad's cousin is Native and so was her mom. My Uncle is Native too.

I have two cousins who look Native but they are a descendant and so is their dad. I look white and I consider myself white. I mark Caucasian for race.

Race is a social construct. So it isn’t so much that people pass as something they are not, as people are what they pass for.

If people know you have parents who they perceive as coming from different backgrounds, and consequently they treat you as mixed race, then you are mixed race.

If on the other hand you are walking around a strange community where nobody knows you, and they all think that you are white, then you effectively are white.

So taking Elizabeth Warren as an example - she has effectively lived her life as a white woman. The fact that she has some Cherokee DNA doesn’t really change that which is why people made fun of the DNA test - although it did demonstrate that she wasn’t lying about having an American Indian ancestor.

There is the secondary question of how you feel in yourself. There is an element of ethnicity that is deeply personal. I had friends who were brothers who got in an argument about what box they should tick on an ethnicity form. One of them ticked “white - British” and the other ticked “other” and wrote “Jewish”. They were genetically very close relatives - but their experiences of ethnicity were very different and so they identified differently.

Haha MG I can just imagine you on the train! I love the episode of Fawlty Towers with the Germans when Basil holds his finger on his upper lip and starts Goose-stepping round the dining room!

I remember when I first started to apply for jobs, I had no idea what box to tick for my nationality so I was told to select white. I have very little Native in me so I would be white.
