Trump: 'The only way we're going to lose this election is if the election is rigged'

Quote:
President Trump on Monday further cast doubt on the U.S. election process, claiming falsely that the only way he would lose in November is if the election is “rigged.”

Trump made the remark at the end of a speech to supporters in Oshkosh, Wis., on Monday afternoon as he implored them to vote. It follows months of Trump claiming without evidence that widespread mail-in voting during the coronavirus pandemic would invite fraud into the election.

“We have to win the election. We can’t play games. Go out and vote. Do those beautiful absentee ballots, or just make sure your vote gets counted. Make sure because the only way we're going to lose this election is if the election is rigged,” Trump told the group of supporters at the outdoor campaign event. “Remember that. It’s the only way we’re going to lose this election, so we have to be very careful.”

“The only way they’re going to win is that way. And we can’t let that happen,” Trump said just hours before Democrats are set to begin their 2020 convention to formally nominate Joe Biden as the party's presidential candidate.

People on WP and in the outside world are for the most part pretty skeptical about my longstanding prediction that Trump will not leave the White House voluntarily. At this point I am at a loss as to what is needed to overcome this denial.

If he refuses to leave voluntarily I'd have no problem with him leaving in a bag. 8)

Trump is trying to rig the election by trying to slow down the ballots from being mailed. So he has removed a bunch of mail sorting machines. I also hear more blue mail boxes have been getting removed.

Well, I suppose that - if Donald Trump stuck to his guns in the event of a loss - it could trigger a 25th amendment case for his removal. So he could end up leaving office even faster than scheduled.

This would have to be initiated by vice president Mike Pence, of course, but there is likely an upper limit to anyone's loyalty to Trump... judging by the sheer number of former allies who have since become strong critics, including Rex Tillerson, James Mattis, John Bolton, Omarosa Newman, Michael Cohen and... the "Mooch".

And those who would stay on Donald Trump's administration if he illegally refused to stand down could risk a charge of seditious conspiracy, which could land them up to 20 years in prison.

So even if Trump *does* refuse to leave voluntarily if he loses the election, there is likely a very high probability that his own administration will either kick him out or abandon him en masse to avoid criminal prosecution.

As of August 18th, Trump is polling better than he did vs Clinton in the battleground states.

So, isn't Trump likely to be re-elected ?

Plus, he should do well in the debates as Biden gets confused when speaking.

Strange: Looks like a person expressing the opinion that they will win the next election, and it would take something rigging the election for a different result.

Could you clarify where he states he won't leave if he does lose, as all I have seen is conspiracy theories that he won't, with no factual evidence to support them, purely conjecture.

Then again, to leave voluntarily either requires him to resign or finish a second term. Leaving after an election loss is only partially voluntary, as it is also compelled (to a degree) by the election results and is not being done entirely by choice.

Actually, the following are Donald Trump's own words:
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/transc ... dent-trump

Quote:
WALLACE: Are you suggesting that you might not accept the results of the election?
TRUMP: No. I have to see. Look, Hillary Clinton asked me the same thing.

Quote:
WALLACE: But can you give a, can you give a direct answer you will accept the election?
TRUMP: I have to see. Look, you – I have to see. No, I’m not going to just say yes. I’m not going to say no, and I didn’t last time either.

"Not accepting" and "not abiding by" are 2 different things, though.

In the first, he (like the Democrats following the 2016 results) may complain about the results, but it does not follow that he would not abide by them and refuse to leave.

Asking someone to state they will "accept" the results before the game starts implies that they will be happy to ignore any "irregular" activity which occurs that may affect them, even before this is identified, and would give the opposing side the message that whatever they may do (within or without the rules) will be ignored, rather than questioned and made subject to scrutiny.

Considering the bruhaha of "not my president!" tantruming that went down last election, Trump is not what comes first to mind as having a poor track record of accepting election results.

The DNC was held in late July last cycle so early August was Clinton’s post convention bounce. You can see this quite clearly on the 2016 graph on your own link, where Clinton’s lead goes very low during and after the RNC before going up again during the DNC.

Correcting for convention effects, Biden is polling significantly ahead of Clinton. Again, this is shown on your graph.

What I mean by voluntarily leaving has nothing to do with resigning. It is the scenario whereby he loses and come January 20, 2021 at 12 noon when constitutionally his term is up he physically does not leave White House. At that point he is a criminal trespasser and a threat to President Biden and the Secret Service should deal with him accordingly.

One has to remember that he is probably an NT speaking to his mostly NT supporters. NT communication is often not about literal word communication but implied meanings. He is setting the stage for his supporters to not accept the results. Right now all he is literally asking is for his supporters come out and vote. Should he lose I expect him to ramp up the requests to his voters to not accept the results and to physically do something about it. If he is physically carried out by Secret Service and or arrested that would make him a martyr to some supporters inspiring them to do something about it.

As for whataboutism I fully expect the progressives not accept the results of a Trump win and to physically try and do something about it. The constant talk about Trump rigging the election is setting the stage for their not accepting the results. Already Congresswomen Presley is calling for unrest in the streets over the alleged defunding of the Post Office. As of now defunding the post office is a “suggestion”.

Bottom line both sides are acting recklessly and dangerously irresponsibly making it very likely that the aftermath of the election is going to be really ugly.

Oh god... I'm laughing so hard I have tears in my eyes.

One thing I worry about is what if despite losing the election Trump still has enough loyal supporters that he attempts a coup? :?

Again, all you are talking about is "accepting the results", yet provide no evidence that he wouldn't "abide by" them.

Most people would understand what was meant (particularly as he has talked about others not having "accepted" the results of the 2016 election, showing awareness of what the term implies/giving an example of it).

I do agree about the "implied meanings", however, which are often used in the media to make things sound the way an audience would want (or to allow appropriate "rephrasing" or "clarification" in the reporting), and so he would have provided the answer which would suit his target audience. Similarly, a person wouldn't get to (and then stay in) a position of leadership in business or politics without being aware of the use of semantics.

So, can you help me out here by showing ANYTHING that has been said or done that shows he would not leave the White house should he lose the election, not just supposition or assumptions of others that he won't?
