A Wisconsin state agency is reportedly mandating that its employees wear face masks during video conferences, even if they are home alone.

In a July 31 email, the Department of Natural Resources Secretary Preston Cole reminded employees that the governor's mask order, which requires anyone over the age of 4 to wear a face-covering while indoors, was to take effect Aug. 1, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

“Also, wear your mask, even if you are home, to participate in a virtual meeting that involves being seen — such as on Zoom or another video-conferencing platform — by non-DNR staff,” Cole said, according to the Sentinel. “Set the safety example which shows you as a DNR public service employee care about the safety and health of others.”

Under the Gov. Tony Evers' order, Wisconsinites are required to cover up when they are indoors or in an enclosed space with anyone outside their household or living unit. Face coverings are also "strongly recommended" when people are outdoors and it's not possible to maintain physical distancing, according to a press release from the governor's office.

So it is more important to be seen wearing a mask as a symbol than actually protecting the individual from the virus! The phrase "guided by the science" is in vogue. Right! Virtual coronaviruses! Hmmmmmm!

Wow that is nonsense. Just a tad too far.

I mean I get the whole 'set the safety standard', but aren't they doing that by being at home.

Necessary for the demoralization of the country.

VIRTUAL FIRE DRILLS

U.S. schools are conducting virtual fire drills as the coronavirus pandemic keeps some students out of classrooms and on their computers.

People in states across the country have taken note of the bizarre practice. Jason Hammer, the Indiana-based radio host of the "Hammer and Nigel Show," tweeted a video about his son's virtual fire drill on Wednesday.

"Today we have a virtual fire drill, [and] they are showing us where to walk out of the building that we are not in right now in case that building catches fire," Hammer's son, a student at Beech Grove High School taking online and in-person classes during the coronavirus pandemic, said in the video while showing a blueprint of the school's building on his computer screen.

Hammer told FOX Business that the drill seemed like a "complete waste of time," and he thought his son was playing a joke when he first told him about the virtual drill, which is why he decided to record and share it on social media.

Melody Stevens, communications director for Beech Grove City Schools, said the school knew some parents would "think it was silly to hold it while others have applauded the effort."

"A lot of parents need to try to remember to walk in the shoes of a high school principal during [a] pandemic," she said. With Beech Grove's new hybrid school model — which allows students to chose whether they want to attend school online, partially online and in-person or completely in-person — the school's administration is trying to keep all students on the same page.

The Indiana Department of Education said it requires all schools to conduct a fire drill within the first 10 days of classes, but it does not mandate or requests that schools conduct virtual drills.

Beech Grove High School's administration wanted to make sure "every student would be provided the same services and activities, whether they are in school, at home or on the hybrid schedule" because "online learners have the option of coming back to school after the first nine weeks," she said.

But some virtual fire drills aren't just about fulfilling state mandates and informing students.

Since as early as March, students attending both private and public schools in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Texas and Nevada have been conducting virtual drills to give students a break from their everyday routines. Some teachers encouraged their students to post pictures of their unexpected outdoor excursions on social media.

Chandra Barnett, principal of J.L. Long Middle School in Dallas, said her school conducted a virtual fire drill back in March to keep students "involved in school," she told CBS Dallas-Fort Worth. Students were encouraged to take pictures of themselves outside after "evacuating" their homes as part of the virtual drill and share them with classmates online.

"To have a smile, to laugh, is great," Laashawn Guillory, an assistant principal, told the outlet. "At the end of the day, we want them to know that we love them, we care for them, no matter where they are they have our hearts."

Principal Tam Larnerd at the Las Vegas-based Spring Valley High School conducted a similar virtual fire drill procedure in April, according to news outlet The Review-Journal.

Students were told to evacuate their homes, take a headcount of family members and incorporate a bit of physical activity into the drill, the Review-Journal reported, adding that other schools have similarly incorporated virtual drills into their schedules and encouraged social media posts sharing the mid-day breaks.

Yeah, Kinda like the whole "Trumps stealing all the mailboxes" conspiracy theory.

Isn't the policy for public officials to wear a mask to convince the public that it is completely safe and easy to do so, something that makes complete sense? Especially when there is a counter narrative against masks. I am sure that they would also advise against being on zoom calls while being completely naked even if being in the comfort of their own home outside of the weather and no one can technically see their junk.

It is a classical case of virtue signaling. Wearing a mask indoors in your own home when you are by yourself in front of your computer screen does not effectively protect you from the coronavirus. Where is the coronavirus?

Bioethics Professor Suggests Adding 'Mind Control' Hormones To Water Supply To Fight COVID

There are crazier ideas than harsh, indefinite lockdowns to fight the coronavirus. One was proposed by a bioethics professor: Put mind-controlling hormones in the water supply to make people more cooperative.

Conspiracy theorists who oppose the fluoridation of drinking water claim that fluoride is added not to strengthen teeth but to allow for mind control. According to the "theory," fluoride damages the brain and makes a person more susceptible to control by others, like the government. Of course, it's complete nonsense.

But now, thanks to a medical ethics professor, conspiracy theorists can point to a real person who really suggested fighting coronavirus by tainting the water supply with a chemical that makes people more cooperative. In other words, he thinks a benevolent form of mind control could help us defeat COVID-19. Here are excerpts of what Prof. Parker Crutchfield wrote in The Conversation:

Let's set aside the fact that this is bat s#!t crazy and focus on two gigantic problems.

First, administering a mind-altering substance to a person without his knowledge or consent is highly unethical. It boggles my mind that an ethicist could come to any other conclusion. (Funnily enough, he cites himself when he claims that "some have argued" that moral enhancement should be administered secretly.)

Second, we already have tested extensively drugs that are supposed to alter thoughts and behavior. They're called antidepressants. And a lot of them suck. For some people, antidepressants are no better than placebo or have only modest effects. The same would almost certainly be true of "moral enhancers" like the hormone oxytocin. There's also the problem of side effects, which the author does acknowledge.

Can Any Treatment Be Made Compulsory?

This is a tricky question. We at ACSH are not keen on forcing people to do things. But there are a handful of situations in which the "evil" of forcing people to act is preferable to the "evil" of a laissez-faire approach that can result in widespread harm.

Take vaccines, for instance. Dr. Josh Bloom and I (as well as Dr. Ethan Siegel and I) have argued that some vaccines, such as for highly infectious diseases like measles for which an extremely effective vaccine exists, should be compulsory. Why? Because without a high level of herd immunity, outbreaks occur, putting the immunocompromised and babies too young to be vaccinated at risk. It doesn't make as much sense to mandate flu vaccines (or perhaps even COVID vaccines), as they are not always highly effective. (That's not an excuse to skip them!)

Another area that probably requires mandatory treatment is mental illness, but only in those cases in which a person becomes a threat to himself or to society. The homelessness crisis is in large part driven by untreated mental illness, and these patients are vulnerable to disease and being victims of crime.
