Faith and religion are not the same thing.  Religion is the expression of faith through ritual acts, and is a human invention, which is what makes religion so pointless.  Faith is a relationship with G^D (only) through Jesus (only), empowered by the Holy Spirit (only).

Science flies you to the Moon, Religion flies you into buildings, and Faith flies you to Heaven.


I think you need a religion to know what to believe. No one would know anything about Jesus or the Holy Spirit without the Christian religion except in rare circumstances where it was supernaturally revealed to them (like Saint Paul). I think other people could have faith in a higher power without religion by following their conscience and obeying the natural law but I think the majority would base their faith on whatever feels right to them and be led astray.

i'd say the bible is one of the more [all too often willfully] misinterpreted books in human history.

Lutherans can be liberal or conservative. My own Lutheran Church Missouri Synod tends to be conservative while the Evangelical Lutheran Church In America tends to be more liberal, but individual members can go either way.
Whether Calvinism has been debunked or not is a matter of opinion. Reformed and Presbyterian churches, which are Calvinistic in doctrine, would beg to differ. Most fundamentalists and evangelicals tend to be Arminian in doctrine, which teaches human beings cooperate in their own salvation by choosing to believe. In fact, this doctrinal stance has always been rejected by Lutherans and Calvinists, whom for the most part are the doctrinal basis of mainline denominations today.

There shouldn't be a state religion.

No church should be tax exempt or above the law. However, the vast majority of religions are currently peaceful enough that in their true form they should be legal.

No murder cults allowed, though and no brainwashing people to kill themselves to reach the afterlife.
