Why is Russia so obsessed with US election

So since 2016, we have had Russian trolls online disrupting our election and it didn't end when Trump took office. There are still trolls from Russia online with fake media accounts making left or right political posts pretending to be an activist or something and will post memes or GIFS and post extreme things in order to disrupt our upcoming election.

I think because of this, people have gotten so paranoid, they don't know who to believe anymore. My husband has been mistaken as a Russian troll because all he posts is political stuff but he tells me he drives people crazy because he is a independent and people can't prove he is a troll because he isn't left or right. I guess people get mad online when they think someone is a troll but don't fit into one.

Even online people think there is always some sort of agenda when someone says something critical about Trump and even I have noticed it here on this forum. What if that was the Russian Trolls' idea all along? What if their idea was also to get the liberals to believe anyone with a MAGA gear is a troll and a real life one because they are doing it to make people mad? It's to create chaos and drama in our country to split us apart. Crazy right? Sounds like a conspiracy but this is one of the conspiracies I believe in.

Why can't it be trolls from other countries being so obsessed with our election, why only Russia?

Of course not every political troll is from Russia. Kaitlin Bennett isn't a Russian Troll, she is a right wing troll from the US.

I believe that Russian interference in US politics has two objectives:

1. To weaken the US by creating instability in its political system (primary)
2. To support a candidate (Donald Trump) whose policy will be favourable towards Russia (secondary)
3. For the LULZ

I can see why some might assume that (2) is the primary motive, but Russian operatives obviously know that Trump is just a transitory figure who can serve no more than 8 years. And Congress has effectively blocked most of Trump's attempts at courting Russia anyway, so his presidency in itself has very little tangible value to Russia.

Political instability in the US (1) is much more valuable to Russia, as this will force the US to allocate focus and resources to domestic issues at the detriment of foreign policy objectives - regardless of who wins the election.

So Russia likely doesn't want the MAGA crowd or the BLM crowd to win - they want to keep them at each other's throats.

Keep in mind, though, that Russian interference is also a sign of Russia's weakness; The country is still a military superpower, but not an economic one. It has a lot fewer options for countering US global influence than during the Cold War, and a bunch of hackers in a basement (a cozy and fancy one, though) is a lot cheaper than a high-tech Star Wars-like arms race.

Why Russia?

Because at one time, Russia was the larger part of a union of communist states that was the primary opposing superpower to the superpower that was the US. Russia would like to restore it's prominence on the world stage and having the US fall to its own internal divisions is the cheapest way to do it. And they can laugh all the way to the bank as we destroy ourselves with our capitalist and free speech culture.

Meanwhile, of course, China has been on the rise for decades.

Uncertainty is certainly one of their aims. They want people to lose faith in their media and to feel negatively about their countryfellows.

I would note that while their interference in the American elections has gained the most attention, they’ve also been caught interfering with elections in many free countries, as well as certain referenda.

Then you acknowledge that the fact your husband has been mistaken for a Russian troll implies that there aren’t really as many trolls about as people think. And then you conclude that the reason people think there are more trolls about than there actually are is … because that’s what Russian trolls want you to think. That’s remarkable. And then you call Kaitlin Bennett a troll, which makes one wonder what your definition of a troll is. Anyone you disagree with perhaps?

Perhaps the question you should be asking is why the US establishment has spent years spreading this nonsense about “Russian meddling”, and why so many US citizens so willingly believe it. After all, this is the same establishment that told you that Iraq had WMDs, and that Assad gassed his own people in the middle of a war that he was winning, and that it would be racist for Trump to enforce border controls in the middle of a global pandemic, and that face-masks didn’t protect ordinary people against a contagious respiratory disease because only medical professionals know how to put them on, and that the BLM/antifa riots that have been raging for the past few months have been “mostly peaceful protests” and certainly haven’t had anything to do with the spike in covid infections, and so on and so on. I guess some people just cannot fathom that their respectable media and politicians would lie to them.

Also, if Russia are actually taking an interest in the US elections, then it’s probably no more than any other country is doing. And the main reason other countries take an interest in US politics is that US politics affects them, given the US’s decades-long record of invading other countries, CIA sponsored coups, crippling economic sanctions and all the rest of it.

That is the whole point of people being a professional troll. Then soon people get so paranoid, they don't even know who is real or just a fake account. They want to disrupt our election and create chaos.




If you have actually followed her videos, you will see she clearly does not want to have a discussion with those who have a different opinion than her. She has an agenda and her point is to mock and humiliate and she doesn't even want a real answer because she will cut them off and interrupt and not hear their answer and she will also twists what they say to fit her agenda. But when she talks to a Trump supporter, she actually has a genuine conversation with them. It's rare when she actually does let someone with a different view than her talk and actually have a genuine conversation. I think she is someone who likes to troll the libs. Plus she has condtradicted herself like the time she knowledge in one of her videos the Holocaust did happen but in a Tweet of hers, she did Holocausts denial and it's been deleted now but someone did a screen shot of it. I don't even know what it real, she might have written that to troll liberals. Also she says she is for free speech but yet if anyone criticizes her on their channel, she will do a bogus takedown claim for copyright to censor anyone who is critical of her. Freedom of speech huh?

I have honestly stopped following her videos because this all got old and not amusing to watch anymore even though I am still subscribed to her channel.

@League_Girl, I'm not sure which interference you're referring to. Regarding the claim that the Russian state hacked John Podesta's e-mails:

US spy agencies are obsessed with defeating Tor (as documented by the Snowden leaks), so it would be astonishing if they simply missed that (and it would also be strong evidence that they're unable to run a competent counter-intelligence operation). And considering the habitual dishonesty of the sources of much of this information - Obama's director of National intelligence lied to Congress when he responded to Senator Wyden (D-Oregon) that the US doesn't collect "any type of data at all" on US citizens - why would you trust these reports even if they weren't full of gobsmacking errors?


If you're referring to allegations that Russia used $100,000 worth of Facebook ads to swing the election, keep in mind that election spending in 2016 topped $3 billion ($640 million by Clinton, $300 million by Trump and $2 billion by Wall Street alone), and that there's a bit of a double standard:

And regarding those two sources: The Intercept is run by the former Guardian reporter who broke the Snowden and Reality Winner whistleblower stories. The Progressive has been significantly to the left of the US Democratic party since before either of us were born (assuming that we're both less than 111 years old).

Putin obsessively holds a grudge against America for causing the collapse of the Soviet empire, and now is using his skills as a KGB spymaster to return the favor.

I've heard China and Iran also want to manipulate our election.

I know our country is hated by other countries so I guess they want to mess with our politics.

I think its a combination of a) creating domestic turmoil to redirect the United States focus from abroad to back home, and b) its good propaganda for the interfering nations to keep their own populations under control by fueling distrust toward the United States (us vs them narrative, not us vs our own government)

It's reverse psychology. They want the democrat to get elected so by appearing to be in favor of Trump, they hope the American people will vote against Trump. Why do they favor the democrat? Russia's biggest export is oil. With US energy independence and the US being a major energy exporter, it has a huge impact on Russia's bottom line. They know that if a democrat is president, they will work to cut back on energy production at home which will have a huge impact on the energy market that will benefit Russia.
