Quote:
Democrats 'had a dud election' and did 'nowhere near' as well as they expected
15/11/2020|4min

The Democrats "did have a dud election" irrespective of the outcome and didn't do anywhere near as well as they were expecting to, says Sky News contributor Cory Bernardi.

"We know not one Republican lost their seat in the House, in fact they picked up seats," Mr Bernardi said.

"We know the Democrats didn't get control of the senate.

"They didn't do anywhere near as well as they were expecting to".

Sounds like Biden is going to have a hard time getting initiatives to pass through the congress and senate.

Underperformed, but pretty much winning the Presidency, barring some major unlikely development, and retaining a majority in the House are accomplishments, even if they lost a handful of seats. There are still two run off senate races to be resolved in Georgia that IF go to Democrats would remove the Republican majority.

In that case Biden can act unrestrained. Hopefully most Americans will be happy with what comes of that.

Given they were predicted to have between 225 and 254 seats in the house (from a starting point of around 235) and they currently have a confirmed total thus far of 219, having lost several seats (although some results are still outstanding).

Adding to that, an expectation (75% chance) of controlling the senate, when the Republicans now hold 50% of the seats, with 2 headed for a run-off, and it certainly isn't an exceptional result...

Maybe if the 450,000 ballots which were reported to have only been completed for Mr Biden, ignoring all other sections, had been filled out completely things may have been different...

Looks like the senate gains by the democrats will be a double win to win control of the senate in Georgia.

Nice to see the stain of Trump being purged to allow proper bills on COVID-19 to get past the pro-Trump gate keepers.

Technically speaking, we do not yet know if the Democrats gain control of the Senate or not... although it would be a a very uphill battle for the Democrats to win *both* senate runoff battles in Georgia, a traditionally Republican stronghold.

And even if the Democrats *did* win both seats, their majority would be razor-thin, as they would have to rely upon 2 independent senators (Bernie Sanders and Angus King)

And Angus King - a moderate - might not support the policies of the more left-leaning Democrats.

The bottom line, though, is this:

Pre-election: Republican presidency, Democratic House, Republican Senate
Post-election: Democratic presidency, Democratic House, (likely) Republican Senate

It could have been a bigger win for the Democrats, but it *is* a win, and not a dud.

… and it is currently an open question if the Republican party will fracture as a result of Trump losing the election… if so, then some of the more moderate Republican senators may choose to support the Democrats when it comes to key pieces of legislation… time will tell, I guess.

Hopefully the few sane republicans left in the senate will allow the passage of bills mean't to save lives.

Their poor performance in the state legislative elections has long term negative consequences.

Don't a lot of bills submitted by US democrats carry the caveat that many will die if they're not passed?
