Rant:
For the past 19 years we have watched and let our freedoms and privacy disappear. Grandma and Grampa get invasively searched going on airplanes, we all get "wanded" in all sorts of places, most of our movements in public are tracked by cameras, and our movements tracked everywhere by our phones. Even before COVID lockdowns had become a way of life for our school children all of this in the name of security yet yesterday revolutionaries were allowed to walk right into the capital unimpeded.
For the past 5 years, I have said here and elsewhere I don't think Trump will leave volentarily. Those of us who felt that way have been laughed at, told we were paranoid, told we don't get it, Trump is just joking, trolling, "owning the libs" and we are naive fools falling for his pranks. On November 7th I watched in horror as massive celebrations broke out when Biden's win was called. I was the Eddie downer here and elsewhere on that day trying to tell everybody the most dangerous period of Trump's presidency had now begun. Rather than being made fun of, I was ignored like a guy that had too much to drink at a party. Nothing and nobody was going to spoil the progressives party.
Yesterday as I watched the coverage on different channels with different biases I was told how this was all unanticipated. Besides 5 years of Trump's statements talking about not respecting elections, we had precedents in armed takeovers in statehouses in Michigan and Oregan where revolutionaries just about walked right in. We had the plot to kidnap the Michigan governor. Just on Tuesday night I posted a story and bolded the part where they talked about the alt-right social media talking about storming the Capital.
So much for the past, we have an inauguration to secure. On multiple channels, reporters were told by people leaving that this was just the beginning next time they are coming back armed. This very well might be bluster by people high because they got what they wanted, once they are met with real guns they will run etc. How can this be assumed now? It must be assumed Eddie downer here is right that Trump won't leave and will surround the White House with supporters in an attempt to prevent the Secret Service from evicting him. It will be bad optics, bad PR but the White House needs to be surrounded by heavily armed protection ahead of time so that the Secret Service can do its job of protecting President Biden from a trespasser if need be.
The revolutionaries probably will probably anticipate that and go harder after state and local governments. This is a huge concern. They are a really soft target. These COVID financially strapped governments don't have the manpower or money to protect government buildings and personnel. Unlike the Federal government, they can't print money and are bound by law not to run deficits.

Ronald Reagan's 2nd inaugural was held indoors simply because the weather was too cold. There's no justification for an outdoor inaugural this time in fact there should be a near total lock down before and after so that security personnel can' do their job with minimal risk.
At this point the question isn't just how to handle the inauguration.
… but also how to handle the remaining 13 days of the Trump presidency until the inauguration.
Given that the storming of the Capitol took a lot of people by surprise (and most critically, the police), it would only be prudent to make preparations for additional madness instigated by the zombie Trump administration.
At this point Trump probably can no longer call on his MAGA patriots (patrioters?) to incite more violence.
… but I wouldn't put it past him to use the remaining two weeks to destroy White House records in order to cover up criminal behavior during his 4 years in office, or to make last ditch illegal financial moves to benefit himself, his family and his closest associates.
Biden might need to spend his first day in office checking if Trump has run off with the silverware.

Trump Finally Pledges 'Orderly Transition' of Power After Congress Certifies Joe Biden's Win
Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th," Trump said after Congress certified his defeat, according to CNN. "I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it's only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again."
Too late this transition of power is cemented in history as infamously disorderly.
If you still go by his word at this stage I do not know what to say to you. Yes it sounds nice but how many times have we heard in the last 6 years time to relax now he is finally “presidential”. With all the pressure he is under to resign he probably means it at the moment. We have years of experience telling us to expect the presidential teleprompter Trump will last a day or two until the real Trump bursts forth.
I hope this means I have been wrong all along. The last thing we need is the image of him being “escorted” out or worse making him more of a martyr. Hope is not the reason not to be getting ready for an eviction and securing the Secret Service.

Some things to consider ...
• Any elected politician who publicly backed Mr. Trump at any time or for any reason is already being perceived by many voters as a "Lame Duck", and will likely not be re-elected (except maybe in Texas).
• Currently, odds are running high that Mr. Trump has at least one more futile act of stupidity to perform before he leaves office.
• Even if Mr. Trump barricades himself in the White House, the swearings-in of Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris can take place anywhere, just as long as they take place.
• Even if Mr. Trump trashes and burns the White House to the ground before Mr. Biden has a chance to go inside, Mr. Biden will still be the President.

Pentagon activates 6,200 National Guard members
Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller signed orders activating the National Guard from Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland for up to 30 days. A defense official said the goal is to have Guard members help secure the U.S. Capitol and the surrounding area through the Jan. 20 inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.
The Guard members are arriving over the next several days. A total of 6,200 have been activated, but the exact number of troops that will actually get to the city may be less than that, depending on who is available in each state. The Guard won’t be armed, but will have riot gear and protective clothing, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to provide troop details.

Facebook seems to share some of the concerns raised here.
They have now blocked Donald Trump's account until *after* the inauguration.

I wonder if Twitter will follow suit...

Anyone who was caught off-guard wasn't paying attention.

As Inauguration Nears, Concern Of More Violence Grows
"Many of Us will return on January 19, 2021, carrying Our weapons, in support of Our nation's resolve, towhich [sic] the world will never forget!! !" one person wrote on Parler, a site friendly to right-wing extremists. "We will come in numbers that no standing army or police agency can match."
That post was one of dozens spotted by the Alethea Group, which tracks online threats and disinformation. Various virtual fliers circulating on social media promise an "armed march" on Capitol Hill and in every state capital a few days before the inauguration. Other posts promise violence on Inauguration Day itself. One post encourages supporters to meet in D.C. specifically to prevent President-elect Joe Biden from entering the White House.
It's unclear how serious the threats of more violence are, but the continued determination of the president's most die-hard supporters to fight what they incorrectly perceive as an unfair election has some members of Congress wondering: Will the insurrection continue? And how can they stop it?
The Washington Post reports that FBI agents are investigating whether some of the Capitol rioters intended not just to disrupt the certification of the Electoral College votes, but also to capture or kill lawmakers. "Tell Pelosi we're coming for that [expletive]!" one rioter screamed at law enforcement. Others chanted, "Hang Mike Pence”
Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, warned Saturday that he was notified of a "disturbing report of a death threat" received Friday by the Iowa Democratic Party. "Threats like this & violence are UNACCEPTABLE," he tweeted.
The likelihood of more violence is one of the reasons Twitter permanently suspended President Trump's account. "Plans for future armed protests have already begun proliferating on and off-Twitter, including a proposed secondary attack on the US Capitol and state capitol buildings on January 17, 2021," Twitter wrote.
Although plans for more armed demonstrations are generally in their early stages, the potential for violence is very real, Alethea Group says. "We're in a tinderbox situation right now," Alethea Group's vice president of analysis, Cindy Otis, told NPR. "Communities online that either participated in Wednesday's violence or supported it are threatening that it was only the beginning of what they have long claimed is an inevitable civil war or revolution."
Otis, a former CIA analyst, says that extremist groups were likely encouraged by seeing how relatively easy it seemed to be to overtake the Capitol building — and how close participants were able to get to political officials whom they see as enemies.
"One would hope that a siege on the Capitol building planned and organized in public view would inspire more preparation by the relevant agencies," she added.
Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, told CNN that the group was seeing online "chatter" from white supremacists online who feel "emboldened" by the current moment. "We fully expect that this violence could actually get worse before it gets better," he said.
