That could very well be the truth.

The smart ones, however, are distancing themselves as far as possible from the radical element while still retaining their GOP membership.

Come to think of it ... are there any smart ones remaining in the GOP?

To the best of my understanding, "The Right" is composed of a bunch of wealthy white business leaders who want to maintain their traditional privileges and inherited power through the democratic process; while the "Alt Right" seeks the same things through propaganda, intimidation, violence, and armed insurrection.

The alt-right is the term used to replace the far-right white nationalist movement.

Among Senators, five have strongly distanced themselves from Trump and I suspect they would vote to convict: Mott Romney, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, Pat Toomey, and Ben Sasse. Unfortunately all of them have at one stage or another kowtowed to Trump, either on the Supreme Court or on the first impeachment or both.

In the House, some senior Republicans have indicated that they will vote for impeachment, and the leadership has decided not to “whip” their votes.

Outside of Congress, some great GOP politicians remain. My favourite is Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland, who tried to send his state’s national guard to defend the Capitol but was blocked. Others include Charlie Baker, Phil Scott, Chris Sununu, Bill Weld, and Jon Huntsman.

I like the ones you mentioned, but I worry that even they will be lumped with Trump.

As for the pro-Trump people, I mostly want Greg Abbott, our s**t-for-brains governor out, probably more than I want Trump out.
