Yeah, it's not aesthetically pleasing, but it also doesn't compare with the washing of polyester or nylon clothing, which releases non-degradable microfibers into the water.
They still shouldn't be thrown out. Plus, the bigger harm is, from what I've understood, different kinds of animals ending up eating parts of them. Needless to say, that's not safe for them.
