Cancel culture is just a meme (some) boomers throw around because they're angry they no longer control cultural standards of decency. We should stop falling for this nonsense.

I am starting to think cancel culture isn't really a thing and it just basically means being held accountable for your actions. Losing followers or supporters or subscribers. A company deciding they no longer want to work with you or represent you. Someone decided to let you go because they don't want their job to look bad with you working there because of something you posted online. All of these things have always happened but back then it was easier to get away with without social media and lot of people didn't carry movie cameras around to capture it and put it online for the whole world to see.

True. But also: a stupid remark, a bad taste joke etc. Used to be just that. Now they sre like a crminal record that lets everyone know that you, too, tried to make an edgy remark once, that didn't work well, and you left it at that. But that attempt at an edgy remark is coming back to haunt you, because it's impossible to tell if you were attempting an edgy remark or are secretly racist/sexist/-ist.
It's a very difficult situation, and people do loose their jobs over preemptive measures to avoid outrage that hasn't happened yet.

The very nature of making an edgy remark, the fact that it is edgy, means that it could be taken badly. If you know that going in, you really don't get to act surprised if or when it gets taken badly. That was the risk of the act to begin with. You don't get to take your money back just cos you don't like the hand you were dealt in poker. Adult games win adult prizes, and face adult consequences. Welcome to responsibility. It's not supposed to taste good when it goes wrong.

What's the point of a rule if there's no consequence when it get's broken? Obey the rule! "No!" Well, he's got us, we can't do anything... Clearly you didn't MEAN for the edgy remark to be taken badly, just like a drunk driver didn't MEAN to kill everyone in the car they collided with. But if that's what happens, that's what happens. You still gotta deal with the consequences of that.

Not to mention, why do you NEED to make the edgy remark? Cos other people do? Look how it ends for them. Maybe there's better behavior to emulate, ya? You were TRYING to be edgy, you don't get to say "oops, I didn't mean that!". And if you didn't mean what you said, maybe you shouldn't say things you don't mean. How are people supposed to know what you DO mean and what you don't? Take your word for it? How do they know you mean it? Don't be disingenuous, it's just another form of dishonesty.

If you're making an edgy remark with no understanding of what you're saying, you're playing with fire, and probably shouldn't "experiment" with "edgy jokes". You don't get un-shot just cos you didn't know the gun was loaded. A knife still cuts, even if you have no understanding of what "sharp" is. "I didn't know!" doesn't cut it in the real world. That's a kid's excuse, and why acting "edgy" is a kid's game.

And for the record, plenty of people make edgy jokes that bomb, and do JUST FINE. More often than not, the "joke" in question wasn't their first strike, it's just the only strike that got publicity - or their response to the criticism of the "joke" made their position clear, and was the final nail. Very seldom do people get axed for a minor first-strike. And if you think what they did is minor, you may want to self-reflect a little bit. Occasionally people do overreact, and that's nothing new - it's just a lot more public now - but more often than not, people are getting at least some of what they deserve, as opposed to being blindly and irrevocably punished for the slightest most innocent of transgressions, as some people seem to think.

Most bigotry doesn't realize it's bigotry, cos it mistakenly believes that the bigotry they hold is merely "truth". To them, black people just ARE violent, mexicans just ARE lazy, and that's all there is to it. That's why they think everything is all about "PC language", and re-naming things to make them sound nicer and protect feelings - "oh, sorry, they're not "lazy", they're "economically disenfranchised", don't wanna offend them!". Failing to realize that they're not flipping lazy or violent, any more than anyone else, and that's just a narrative people buy into, cos that's the narrative america pushed for over a hundred years.

Memes aren't facts. Youtube videos aren't facts. Actions have consequences.

Also, anyone else catch the irony of them implying comedy is dead and cancel culture is rampant, WHILE making a comedic satire, that's entirely paid for using crowdsourcing? At least one of them IS a stand up comedian. So, comedy is dead, yet they're making off well by doing comedy, and you can't say anything offensive, even though they're clearly being provocative, and cancel culture is out of control, even though these videos are still publicly posted available and shareable several years later. Wow. Such canceled. So silenced. Much censored.

It's almost like a kafka trap with a troll comment as bait. Intentionally making a provocative statement in such a way that the legitimate negative response can be taken as proof of their premise.

I have been hearing since 2010 to be careful what you put online. But I mean cmon, teens won't have the cognitive ability to think ahead of their consequences and how it might reflect on them 20 years later and not know how dumb people are to judge people based on their 20 year old posts. Even young adults are stupid too and use poor judgment because their brains are not fully developed so they also may not have the ability to think ahead of their actions and consequences and might not realize how stupid people in general are to understand how a post they make online may come back and haunt them.

The only way out is to not react at all that would confirm their bias so they are really not trapped.

This is why POS say it's white privilege to react aggressively or be angry when someone says something nasty to you and you get provoked. They also call it tone policing. They are not allowed to get angry.

I don't think so. The "nonsense" is when people go apeshit on Twitter over an image from Charlie Brown Thanksgiving where the black character Franklin was seated by himself on one side of a table from the white characters. We could dicuss these kinds of ridiculous moments all day.

We are creating a whole new generation mindless automatons, unable to grasp the damage this nonsense is doing to our ability to have rational discussions and nurture critical thinking.

I think the majority of people are sick of this stuff. A couple of years ago, Dave Chapelle swung back into action after a lengthy hiatus, with a Netflix special. At Rotten Tomatoes, he received single digit approval from woke editors. But once reviews were opened up to the public, he got over 90% approval.

I think that's pretty telling.

You make a strong point about the editors at Rotten Tomatoes being out of touch with their audience. Whether or not that's entirely due to 'wokeness' is a case you have yet to make.

Dismissing people who are more concerned about this than you are as mindless automatons isn't really an argument so much as a concession that you lack an argument. You found one example you consider ridiculous, conveyed your opinion as though that's an objective take on that example and then tried to use that as representative of any concerns of these natures.

Colour me unconvinced that cancel culture is anything but a meme used by boomers throw around because they're angry they no longer control cultural standards of decency. I'm sorry if you've fallen for it but it isn't a real issue.

As much as I hate being lumped in with other "Boomers", I have to agree with this assessment.

Heck, I am even tired of all the some old Top-40 "Boomer" music still being played on the radio!

One example? Are you kidding me? I just gave you two, and I fill five pages with more.

I'm just tired of the ridiculous argument that it's only bigots who have a problem with this BS. It's a completely false narrative. It's a movement that has been corrupted by power, and is now utilized, much like patriotism and religion, to control the masses.

I'm sure they're not all bigots, I'm sure some of them have just swallowed the argument hook, line and sinker without ever performing any critical thinking. It's a meme that's being used to, as you said, control the masses. They keep repeating it and people fall for it.

The cultural Marxists and their cancel culture are trying to destroy your birthright of Western Civilization** the Tucker-bots proclaim and their proof of this is that now Bugs Bunny's girlfriend doesn't show as much skin (fur?) in a kid's movie and that some people keep pointing out how common negative racial stereotypes used to be in some types of media. Sorry, I'm just not getting worked up into a hysteria over nothing.

**paraphrasing an actual Tucker quote, but also a nonsense sentence strung together from alt-right buzzwords.

The Tucker Carlson quote is hilarious. These kinds of comments ate being used to shutdown dialog about this issue.

He's one of the big fear-mongers pushing the notion of cancel culture, that's the sort of rhetoric commonly used to get people worked up and anxious over it. Bellowing about cancel culture is the typical response to any discussion over anything that might be problematic within pop culture.

You're right that this is a trick to shutdown dialog, you're just wrong about who's using the trick.

The same tricks are utlized on both sides. If both parties are owned by all the same corporate interests, wouldn't it be rather foolish to believe one side is better than the other?

Then why play the game if you're aware it's corporate media using this issue as a distraction?

Yes, censorship is a valid concern. Most so called cancel culture doesn't amount to censorship though. Cancel culture is a buzzword that's being pushed primarily by conservative media in order to keep people so emotionally worked up over the idea of censorship that they don't ever really consider the content of the stories that are being reported to support the idea of cancel culture existing.

Since the more mainstream media and conservative media mostly share interests on a lot of matters they use these culture war issues to insist that they're oh so different, but that's no excuse to fall for one of the positions that they're hyping. That's what you're doing when you push the narrative that cancel culture exists. Superficial, easily distracted people on Twitter and their attempts to boycott people haven't had the cultural influence that these fear-mongers insist they have.
