I have travelled in Asia and Europe, and I am often amazed by how badly other Americans will behave. Sure, and I am no saint, but I sometimes have to fake a Russian accent to avoid being associated with my fellow citizens. So here is another one of my lists...
What the stereotypical "Ugly American" is like.
1. We lack any sense of sartorial decorum. Our clothes look as if we either believe that no one can see us, or that we want everybody to look at us. Either way, we never dress appropriately for the weather or the season.
2. We talk too loudly, especially when trying to make ourselves understood. ("D O Y O U U N D E R S T A N D M E ? !")
3. We never learn the local language. Why should we, when we can just speak louder? ("W H E R E - O I S T H E B A T H R O O M - O ?")
3. We have an unfavorable opinion about everything, including the local culture, the local food, the service, the traffic, the people, their language, and the lack of just about every First-World privilege we used to enjoy back home.
5. We stay only in name-brand hotels, patronized only by other Americans, and lock up all of our valuables in the hotel's safe as long as we get a signed receipt.
6. We eat only "American" food. Why should we learn what sinagang na baboy from the family-run restaurant on the corner tastes like when we can just order a burger from room service?
I am sure our non-American members can think of others.
