Because the poor lack opportunities due to not being able to afford education. A lot of manufacturing industries have closed. Mines have closed. So what choice do young men from impoverished backgrounds have? The army. It will have them and it will pay them.

I'd suggest reading up on the USA's past with the draft & the modern idea of voluntary service. It's actually interesting & makes me wish I still had grandpa (191x-200x) around to ask questions about his experiences with it around WWII.

Seriously, though, this has been a recurring feature in many countries with both professional and conscript armies, and those who are born with a silver spoon in handDonald Trump have found quite a lot of ingenious ways of avoiding military service, even with a draft in place. In some countries it has been perfectly legal in the past to pay someone to serve in the military in lieu of a millionaire's son.

There are also some hard truths involved; it takes a lot less skill and time needed to train a soldier than to train an engineer or a doctor, and since the former have much shorter life expectancies than the latter, it makes sense for a country to choose the more easily replaceable manpowercannon fodder.

There is a good historical example of this: One of the main reasons why bows fell out of use with the invention of the crossbows wasn't that bows were inferior weapons. Medieval bows could shoot much faster, as crossbows with the same draw strength often couldn't be drawn by hand.

It was because archers had to be trained and conditioned from childhood to be efficient in battle.

As for crossbowmen: The one with the crossbow shoots, the one without follows him. When the one with the crossbow gets killed, the one who is following picks up the crossbow and shoots.

The poor are the most vulnerable.
If you maintain inequality and desperation, and minimize social security, then people will seize on any chance to make a steady income.
The government will gladly pay for you to kill and die overseas to protect business interests.
Poverty provides a steady supply of desperate people to be paid to fight the elites' wars. Poverty benefits the rich because desperate workers will demand less dignity and respect.

Oh, well that's a relief.

At least these days there is not a draft, granted there are probably still people who join because they feel it is the best opportunity they have and don't see many other choices of what to do.

Also though not the same as having someone around to ask about it, but you could probably find books on experiences of people who fought in those wars. I have certainly read about that kind of stuff before.

Glad the question got clarified. I had no clue what it was from the first post.

I remember asking why so many young working-class men were joining the armed forces in an English town. The reply was "because there's nothing else to do." Meaning no other jobs. Must be that, because it can't take much brain or education to figure out that you might get shot at. The UK gov hasn't dared to bring back conscription yet, and they're so short of volunteers that they go into the schools to try to brainwash the kids.
