Jumping in without doing any research at all, my opinion on this is that very little in Revelation is literal. So this mark probably isn't one thing or stamp, symbol, or one action.

People forget it's not the Devil's number, it's a human number.

Jesus talked about people getting married and doing business and getting on with everyday things, until suddenly the day was instantly upon them.

It seems to me to just be a general attitude of going about a life without any regards for spiritual things. A life where God is not a priority.

It is all about numerology based on the Hebrew alphabet.

For the past 2000 years (or so), people have been inventing their own letter-number transposition systems in just about every language in order to justify their accusations that each of their most hated enemies were "The Beast". None have been correct.

Oh that's reminded me of something in a dusty box at the back of my brian. A lot of heavenly things are numbered 7 or 12 (2 X 7) in Revelation. 6 is one short of 7, so earthly, not quite reaching heavenly fulfilment, not quite enough.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the classic "666" is in fact a misinterpretation of the relevant biblical verse, whatever that said.

Not that I have a great belief in words or numbers being any more meaningful than we chose them to be.
