The amount known from Socrates is extremely limited and probably shaped by thought-clensers after his death. Having said that, if you look at the sociological and technological geeks in ancient Greece, it was a very low fraction of the population who were linked after becoming geeks, rather than becoming geeks because of some educational, geographical or genetic connection.

I think it extremely likely, then, that the fringe intellectual giants of that time were indeed Asperger's. Socrates - maybe. Some of his traits were Aspie, but diagnosing individuals even a hundred years ago is hard work and probably inaccurate. Diagnosing them 2,500 or so years in the past, largely on second-hand accounts, is not going to be any better.

Socrates was killed because he made a lot of important people look foolish in public, and because he heard and followed a mystical voice, his "daimonion" (although that is a little controversal), but mostly because he was a smart a$$ at his trial.

Aspie? Could be...

What about Thales, the founder of philosophy of mathematics? Supposedly he could have invented the idea of mathematical proof, along with being the first natural philosopher. He was also the first "absent minded professor". Supposedly, he was walking along looking up at the sky when he walked right into a well! Now that I know more about Asperger's, sounds possible to me.
