Nobody cares we are bankrupting the future

Anybody remember “Ok Boomer” was primarily about resentment of boomers gluttony leaving crumbs and massive debts for the zoomers?

It should be noted that even if the most “moderate” budget is passed it would be by far an unprecedented amount of government spending. Biden ran and won as the sane guy against the squads “insanity”. There was always discussion of how much Biden would compromise with the “progressive wing”. Compromise?, more like become a member pushing not only a lot of spending but in priorities such as free Pre K, equity etc. You would never know it from all the yelling and screaming a product of our if you are not for us 100 percent you are evil era.

The Republicans have rediscovered their old deficit spending is bad messaging. It is ineffective because it has zero credibility because of the then unprecedented deficit spending they were all on board for during the Trump years.

I understand we had an emergency. If drastic action was not taken we probably would have had a worse economic depression then the one in the 1930s. But now we are apparently transitioning from a pandemic to an endemic.

The fears of a poor future were legitimate. The future looks even worse now. The bill is going to come due one way or another. Most of the excruciating pain will be felt by the zoomers, the boomers who spent the money will protect themselves. Yet the zoomers have been pretty quiet. Causation does not equal correlation but I can’t help but think that a lot of the resentment of boomers gluttony was about Trump.

I'm a bit skeptical myself, despite liking some of the broader goals of both bills. I do have some people in my ear trying to sell me pretty hard on all the ways the soft infrastructure bill will eventually pay for itself. It is pretty well targeted to reverse many of the negative trends that have caused worry for the younger generation. It is my young adult children who want the soft infrastructure the most, and consider it the most essential to our future economy. Me - it's easier to sell me on the hard infrastructure. I'm pretty solidly solid on the hard infrastructure; the track record for how hard infrastructure helps the economy is strong.

I favor paring the soft infrastructure bill down into its most pragmatically essential elements, the ones with the most promise for supporting and improving the broader economy going forward. Which those are I don't know for sure, but I'd probably cut the free community college (community college isn't that difficult to afford in its current state). Not sure what else.

Funny how Republicans only see the light on the deficit when it isn't their own bill. This has been consistent administration after administration since Regan in the 1980s. I don't buy it. They need to own that the TCJA of 2017 NEVER was penciling out in the way they were selling it, and never provided the promised growth that would mitigate its costs.

The biggest mistake the boomer generation made was to fall for any version of trickle down economics. The fortunes of my generation and all those behind me fell when we forgot just how much intentional and smart government investment had been doing for the economy in the middle of the century. The timelines show it pretty clearly. Don't mistake for me for being willing to suddenly reverse course completely; I'm pretty frugal; but not all spending is bad spending, and not all tax cuts are good tax cuts.

I'd rather waste money the way Biden wants to waste it than this way.
