YouTube Bans Videos Linking Autism, Vaccines

YouTube is cracking down on vaccine misinformation, saying that it will remove videos suggesting that vaccines cause autism, among other falsehoods.

The video platform, which is owned by Google, said this week that it is updating and expanding its policies addressing harmful vaccine content.

YouTube already barred content containing inaccurate information about COVID-19 vaccines and the company said 130,000 videos have been removed since last year for violating that policy. But inaccurate ideas about other types of vaccines had been allowed to proliferate on the platform.

Now YouTube has decided that the policy on COVID-19 vaccines didn’t go far enough.

“We’ve steadily seen false claims about the coronavirus vaccines spill over into misinformation about vaccines in general, and we’re now at a point where it’s more important than ever to expand the work we started with COVID-19 to other vaccines,” reads a blog post from YouTube announcing the policy change.

YouTube indicated that it will still allow content talking about vaccine policies, trials as well as historical successes and failures. Personal testimonies are also permitted as long as they don’t violate the site’s guidelines or come as part of a channel with a pattern of pushing vaccine hesitancy, the company indicated.

YouTube said the new policies will take effect immediately, but it will take time for them to be fully enforced.

The only antidote to disinformation, whether it's coming from official sources or private citizens, is discussion and debate. Censorship is never the answer. The people doing the censoring are invested in maintaining the corporate state.

I've watched for years how they go after alternative, anti-establishment voices, many of them award winng independent journals.

Anybody who supports this decision is clueless.

The only problem is that it is a bit like having two political parties but banning anyone who votes from one from voting because while I agree in principle that if someone has the intention of spreading lies then they should be removed, I do not agree that banning all who want to air their views innoce tly because they feel that something is wrong should come into the same catagory.

When one watches Youtube, the whole point is that one watches things that allows people to air their personal views. One should never take those views as being truth without questioning it be the views pro or anti vaccine related.

What is there to stop pro vaccine supporters from completely making up false evidence to support their claims which is not based on factual truth? Where an anti vaxxer could base their evidence on truth (Yes, it is possible as the vaccines have cause the occasional death and other issues)? I am speaking in theory here.
Where the fabricated evidence to support a pro vaccine approach would be allowed and the true account of a death or a bad result would be not allowed to be aired?

I prefer a more sensible approach to all of this which allows freedom on both sides as long as no one goes out of their way to purposly lie.

I believe we should have the right to see both sides and weigh things up for ourselves, as if we are only allowed to give one side we live in a communistic dictatorship which is by far worse in my oppinion then to hear an occasional fabricated truth...

When discussion and debate leads only to more disinformation, censorship is the final -- and most effective -- resort.

Hardly "clueless". As I said earlier, when discussion and debate leads only to more disinformation, censorship is the final -- and most effective -- resort. Allowing lies about the coronavirus vaccines to remain on a social website (like WrongPlanet) implies endorsement of those lies by the owners and sponsors of that website.

It is long past time that Alex woke up to this.

You don't understand the mechanics of an oligarchy, which it appears you obviously don't, then you are really not qualified to be in this discussion. It's akin to a flat earther asking for evidence that the world is round.

I'll always proudly be against this type of censorship.

Oh, I understand oligarchies alright; I just do not care anymore, because people are dying without the vaccines.

Online health disinformation can become so pervasive that it begins to sway not only those on the fringe who are seeking alternate treatments and explanations but also authorities, including nurses, doctors, and the police, who are charged with protecting the most vulnerable.

The owners and moderators of YouTube, Instagram, and WrongPlanet would do right to ban anyone who spreads further disinformation regarding the coronavirus, covid, face masks, and the vaccines.

You go right ahead and focus on your precious "oligarchs" ... I have to attend the funeral tomorrow of the 39th person I knew who died from covid after having refused a vaccine because of all the fear and doubt spread by people who should have kept their effing delusions to themselves.

You are either blaming the victims or splitting hairs with regard to motivations of those who spread disinformation.

Ether way, you seem to be promoting the act of spreading disinformation. Would you also cheer on the person who shouts "Fire!" in a crowded theater when there is no fire in the theater?

If the victims bought into anti-vax disinformation and lost their lives because of it, then of course I blame them.

Yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater is hardly the same as spreading disinformation. Nobody has to listen to the crackpots and it's their responsibility to educate themselves.
