Kind of sounds like she was the one who got assaulted and society is doing what it does best, blaming the victim for "acting inappropriately."

I'm feeling mixed on this, there really was no victim given the student was 18 when the incident took place, he was her former student. Only thing she did wrong was make out with her former student and that goes against the teacher policies. She claims her drink was spiked but that sounds like she is making this claim to avoid accountability. Of course the student would feel bad because his actions cost her her job but she still teaches but is now a Yoga instructor.

I looked at multiple sources on this story. Some were behind a paywall so I couldn't read those.

While your take is reasonable society leans heavily into protecting minors from sexual interference from adults, especially adults in a position of power. If there's no evidence to substantiate her claim of the drink being spiked law enforcement has an obligation to protect the minor child and treat them as the victim.

A mere allegation isn't enough to protect an adult from the consequences of sexual contact with a minor. There isn't a better way to reconcile those concerns so the minor child's interests will always end up being placed first.

I don't know any details, but I do think it's kinda messed up that you have young teachers (early 20s, fresh college grads) teaching students who could have potentially remembered them from jr. high. I'm not, strictly speaking, a femimist, but the idea that males have a tendency towards dominance is not a new concept. I think it makes perfect sense. And when you allow younger women into situations that young men could take advantage of a lack of maturity, I think it's a recipe for disaster. I think you need some strict guidelines that reinforce boundaries between young female teachers and high school seniors, more so to protect female teachers. There's no excuse for what happened in this article, and I'm in agreement that the teacher should be disciplined. But for me, it's really more a question of how the teacher and student were even allowed to be alone together in the first place.

Having said that...I believe it is true that first-year teachers should not be allowed to teach middle school. High schoolers want to be related to as equals, as adults, even if they haven't reached majority age. I believe in respecting high school kids as such. Elementary kids just want to play and have fun. Both tend to run themselves. Middle school kids have to be locked up in prison with armed guards, rubber bullets, tazers, and tear gas. Get your feet wet with upper or lower schools, maybe teach a ms reading or math class, or coach an activity, and THEN teach middle school exclusively if you want. Unless you are ex-police or military, you have no business in middle school your first year.

^^^Correction:

Yeah, so...took a minute to actually read the thing. 27 years old? She's either stupid or she WANTED to get caught.

It's always scary reading stuff like that. I personally know other men and women in my line of work (instrumental music) who are sitting in jail or prison over less serious stuff than this. A friend of mine ended up losing a great teaching job because he chose to openly date a student. TECHNICALLY he didn't do anything wrong. Everything was out in the open, everyone seemed to be ok with it...until someone WASN'T ok with it and called for him to be fired. It's flat inappropriate, and that's all that really needs to be said. The scary part is it takes nothing more than an accusation. I'm fortunate that there is a security cam in my room, all my motions throughout the day are under surveillance, and I'm never alone with a student. This lady in the article has some serious issues, and I hope for her sake she's able to work through them. But she clearly doesn't belong in a classroom.
