Now would be a good time for aliens to intervene.

The better option would be for those space aliens to move in on the best real-estate deal in the Orion arm once humanity has destroyed itself.

”No one would have believed in the last years of the twentieth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. And early in the twentieth-first century came the great disillusionment.” — Opening paragraph of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds (updated)

Thats actually been my theory for a long time.

That our solar system is really a "game preserve" in the vast interstellar empire of some alien species.

Like Yellowstone. Or like the Gombe Stream Game preserve were Jane Goodall studied her chimps.

The aliens who visit in saucers are like park rangers, or like Jane Goodall.

Those folks who get abducted, and get "implants", are like fish, and birds, etc that humans capture, and then "tag" , and then release back into the wild.

The aliens release us "back into the wild", and the follow up by abducting us again (to keep tabs on our migrations etc).

My theory is that we all would have wiped ourselves out due to our own folly a long time ago if the aliens had not subtley influenced society and nudged the human race along to prevent things like nuclear war.

But the aliens seem to be asleep at the wheel right now.

Maybe the aliens had a change of policy, and cant afford game preserves anymore. So they changed policy and decided to let us wipe ourselves out. So they can then come in ...flatten earth...and replace it with a Walmart.

You'd think the aliens that spiced the DNA of an ape might be think it's time to terminate this experiment.

Sorry, I can't help you. You are a pre-warp drive world.

Could be.

Back to the drawing board.

The aliens seem to being preserving "relic hominids" like Yeti and bigfoot creatures in isolated places on purpose as a reservoir of DNA to work with.Protecting them for their "domesticated artificial bred cousins"...us. So if they terminate us they can always go back to using bigfoot DNA, and trying to fashion a new and better model of "upright primate" able to use technology. Its hard to get the sweet spot. An ape that make tools, but that can also have enough compassion to not misuse tools.

Isn't this the sort of scenario where if you were the aliens you'd just camp out and wait for the humans to fight it out because they'll be easier to subjugate after they waste all their ability to fight on each other?
