Most excellent YouTube about the history of Cuba and how communism wrecked its economy and the living conditions of its people. Also excellent commentary on the fight for freedom in Cuba in contrast to the steady descent into socialism we’re experiencing in the USA.

Black Lives Matter statement on Cuba criticized for being supportive of government oppression

Quote:
Black Lives Matter (BLM) released a lengthy statement about the upheaval in Cuba calling for the United States to lift its economic embargo and indicating support for the Cuban government.

The statement, posted on the organization’s verified Instagram account, is being widely panned by people of all political ideologies. Many have described it as inaccurate, misinformed, and overly supportive of a brutal dictatorship.

“Black Lives Matter condemns the U.S. federal government’s inhumane treatment of Cubans, and urges it to immediately lift the economic embargo,” BLM’s statement begins.

It goes on to detail alleged harms caused by the embargo, which it says includes hindering Cuba’s ability to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.

BLM then seems to express support for both Cuba’s communist dictatorship and those who want to overthrow it.

“The people of Cuba are being punished by the U.S. government because the country has maintained its commitment to sovereignty and self-determination.

“United States leaders have attempted to crush this Revolution for decades.”

It then says that Cuba has supported other “oppressed peoples of African descent” and supported “Black liberation struggles.”

BLM concludes by calling on President Joe Biden to lift the embargo.

“This embargo is a blatant human rights violation and must come to an end.”

Oh yes, the constant slide down towards universal healthcare and a properly funded public education system.

*ascent into socialism. 8)

Cuba > USA

Plus in communist countries, religion is banned.

Banning religion is no better than theocrats forcing their religious views on you.

I dislike religion but banning it outright would lead to a lot of problems. Sometimes persecution makes people cling to their beliefs all the more. My former religion viewed persecution as proof that their beliefs were valid. (They’d refer to Bible scriptures in which Jesus says that his followers would be persecuted.)

I’d prefer that we do a better job at educating people so they’re less likely to believe in harmful belief systems (or, perhaps, in religion in general).

All of the world's wealthiest countries, at least in today's world, are neither purely capitalist nor purely socialist.

I conclude that neither pure capitalism nor totalitarian attempts at pure socialism work well. The only reasonable question, therefore, is what is the best mixture.

Close-to-pure capitalism works well only in expanding empires, with a never-ending supply of cheap land freshly stolen from conquered peoples.

Cuba was so much better under Batista, at least if you were an American businessperson or mobster.

The fact that Americans are no longer parasites upon Cuba really seems to bother American regimes ever since.

This thread is provocative. I recommend locking it.

If you locked every provocative thread in this forum, there wouldn't be many left.

Most are started by people who at least think they have a valid point to make. This one just seems like an attempt to start an argument. Fortunately it isn't getting mush attention.

Nothing in WP rules prohibits provocative threads.

I am often accused of being long-winded. Sometimes it's nice to just drop a dandelion seed into the breeze, sit back, and see where it goes. I wonder if sometimes people who want to kill a thread early are simply projecting their fears that the OP might happen to be right.

Would it be preferable if I were trolling?

Not all threads that are devoid of substance should be locked. I’d agree with you there. It’s often best to just let them die on their own.

N.Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Argentine, Syria…
they all suck and succumbing now (actually all socialist Arab countries ended up doing way worse than monarchies even); yes even if some of those call themselves «socialist»  these are in fact communist states with the typical one-party dictatorship rule. « Socialism » is just a gentler created by sympathetic media willing to modify a political term to suit their narrative. Communism is not a popular term, and for a good reason. It is like replacing the Global Warming term with « Climate change »; the latter sounds less catastrophic, so it must be better, right?

*Not to confuse with social socialism in Sweden and Canada; which is entirely not the same thing.

Do really some wp leftists here feel butthurt about this fact? I am seeing weird reactions to this factual OP video in this thread. If you think your free-market country sucks so much then why don’t you move to Cuba or Argentina?

Communism sucks and the proof for that it sucked wherever it is applied. I would say the same about Sharia.
