I don't know what my parents voted.
We didn't discuss politics.

I've felt very liberal my whole life, in terms of social politics.
I've always believed in personal liberties, personal freedom, being a world citizen, etc.
I lived by the golden rule and rejected most organised politics.

The only change has been that I'm less bleeding-heart about criminals than I used to be.
That's the result of trauma and violence.
I have very little patience for convicted criminals who are guilty of hurting others, without doubt.
I believe in the death penalty in many cases, whether that's PC or not.

And if I vote for Republican congressmen that person is likely to refuse to certify a non-Republican result. I will vote for the Dem fully expecting disastrous policies and plenty of illiberalism of their own. But as gut-wrenching of a choice as it is the times demand a choice.

Specifically what kinds of "disastrous policies and ... illiberalism" do you expect from Democrats here in New York State?

I used to believe there was hope for the U.S., but no longer do. The system is in a state of collapse that cannot be reversed unless there is a massive awakening of the people to stop shoring up a system that doesn't work for them. It cannot be reformed at this point, only completely destroyed.

I used to be center-left, but the Biden-19 scamdemic caused my political views to shift to hard-right. Heck, I joined QAnon to get my social life back, and fit in them swimmingly. When I saw law-abiding citizens get confined in their homes, had to drive out of state for a banal haircut and a restaurant meal, as violent looters and arsonists got arrest immunity, the jig was up! I realized that "Duh Virus" and the lootings were planned by The Left and their rich sponsors since the beginning. So I became a virulent (pun highly intended) right-winger ever since. All my current friends are staunch conservatives; any former liberal friends are now distant acquaintances at best.

Strange.

I don’t remember you ever being even remotely center-left.

These days I'm so left that people on the far-right want to kill me and I'm so right that people on the far-left treat me like an outcast.

It's like I can't have anyone on my side these days. We're all just one political difference, no matter how small or insignificant, away from our friends and family deciding to stop looking out for us.

I joined this site in 2005. That was then, this is now.

In 2016, I was starting to shift to the right. But it was the Biden-19 scamdemic that clinched my current political beliefs.

And that's an extremely unhealthy situation because it does not give space for constructive discussion.

I used to favour the UK Tory Party. I was fairly young and my political views weren't very well informed. I thought that the welfare system looked after the poor and the disabled properly, that trade unions tried to get too much, and I didn't like working class "culture."

I became more left-wing when I noticed that most of the people I liked had fairly strong socialist leanings. I was surprised how few of them were right-wing. For some time I thought there might be a utopian commune somewhere that I might join, but after looking at a few of them I eventually started to feel that they weren't for me. These days I don't talk much about politics, perhaps because I don't feel that anything much can be done to make the kind of changes I'd like to see.

Perhaps you could start a separate thread in which you explain exactly why you believe this?

Indeed this seems to be a growing problem these days, due to today's major social media, which intrinsically encourage people to form very narrow bubbles.

No need for a separate thread, I can sum it up quite quickly now. Once you have a system that is replicating most late stage empires throughout history, it's over. That is, unless the people rise up and form a massive resistance.

That seems unlikely because because most Americans are firmly stuck in the left v right paradigm.

I've moved left economically in recent years, while becoming more sympathetic to right leaning cultural critiques. I used to be outright hostile to religion, for example, but have started to see the value it has in giving people meaning in their lives, to say nothing of the damage caused when they try to use politics for the same purpose.

I'm pretty much the same as I've always been, politically. I'm still big on personal freedoms...I'm pro choice, anti censorship, all for marrying whoever you want, all for owning guns if you want, all for doing drugs if you want, and so on. It irritates me when the govt. tries to tell people how to live their lives and what they can or cannot do with their bodies. That kind of stuff has always been top priority to me. Second comes social issues. I'm all for people being able to eat, get an education, and have health care...stuff like that.

Yeah, my political views haven't changed much since I was in my late teens/early 20's. I didn't really think about that stuff before then. What has changed though is how I view other people and their political views.

My family was always Republican but they would be considered RINOS now.
I usually vote liberal but have never voted a straight ticket in my life.
When it comes to local elections ,I vote for whoever I consider the best candidate, regardless of party.

My family was against voting for religious reasons, but they were extremely conservative and followed conservative media, claiming that everything else was biased.
