Quote:
...Students at a Virginia school held their first After-School Satan Club meeting on Thursday after being put on hold for months...

The meeting at B.M. Williams Primary School in Chesapeake, Virginia was held "despite efforts by some to shut down the club and prevent it from gaining equal access to school facilities,"...

...the idea of the club was requested by parents as a response to the Good News Club, another student club run by the Child Evangelism Fellowship...parents wanted the club, which is sponsored by The Satanic Temple, for their nontheistic children....

...The group said students in the club will do arts and crafts, puzzles, an science projects. "We aren't sacrificing goats or praising the Dark Lord,"...

..."Under the First Amendment, the government can't treat one religious group less favorably than another, and it can't give potential objectors or hecklers a 'veto' over unpopular speech by charging the speaker (here, the After-School Satan Club) a security fee,"..."That the school district ultimately recognized this and is taking steps to correct these unlawful actions and policies is an enormous victory for free speech, religious liberty, and democracy."

Whatever keeps the inevitable evangelical theocracy at bay.

I support the Satanic Temple's right to have afterschool programs in the public schools.

Their right to exist and assemble is enshrined in the United States Constitution:

Quote:
First Amendment

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

And, as Aspiegaming said, "Whatever keeps the inevitable evangelical theocracy at bay."

Besides, if evangelical "Christian" groups are free to promote hatred, bigotry, and exclusionary practices, then Satanic groups are free to promote equality, fellowship, and inclusion for all.

Weird turn of events, huh?

I'm just waiting for the Levayans and TST to have competing After-School Satan Clubs.

I think most people don’t really understand what Satanism is. As per The Satanic Temple’s website:

Quote:
Do you worship Satan?

No, nor do we believe in the existence of Satan or the supernatural. The Satanic Temple believes that religion can, and should, be divorced from superstition. As such, we do not promote a belief in a personal Satan. To embrace the name Satan is to embrace rational inquiry removed from supernaturalism and archaic tradition-based superstitions. Satanists should actively work to hone critical thinking and exercise reasonable agnosticism in all things. Our beliefs must be malleable to the best current scientific understandings of the material world — never the reverse.

If people interpret the serpent in the Genesis account as being Satan, Satan wanted people to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Bad. I think that makes Satan a positive character. Rebelling against unjust authority does, too.

So basically, TST is a secular humanist group, right?

That said, when I mention Satanism, I'm referring to the Laveyans.

My school district buses kids to and from church activities during school hours. It counts as school time. It usually happens during science class.

It only occurs once a week, but still…

Perhaps if kids went to The Satanic Temple, they’d actually get some science instead of, as one student put it, “learning about Jesus.”

I have nothing against learning about Jesus per se. I just think that should be done outside of public school hours.

It is.

As per their website on LaVeyan Satanism:
Quote:
HOW DOES TST’S SATANISM DIFFER FROM LAVEYAN SATANISM?

TST has its own guiding principles and tenets, distinct from the LaVeyan school, that we feel represents a natural evolution in Satanic thought. The overriding principle calls for utilizing the best scientific evidence available to make the most rational real-world decisions. To that end, we reject LaVeyan social Darwinist rhetoric that fails to agree with what is currently known regarding social evolution, specifically as it relates to research in evolutionary biology, game theory, reciprocal altruism, cognitive science, etc.

TST also strongly rejects the LaVeyan fetishization of authoritarianism. We believe this is antithetical to Satanic notions of individual sovereignty. Further, while LaVeyan Satanism is atheistic in that it rejects the notion that Satan is a conscious entity, it nevertheless adheres to supernaturalism. TST does not forward supernatural theories of the universe and finds little value in LaVeyan edicts such as those that instruct one to “acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.” (From the Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth, Anton LaVey)

They aren’t very big on authority figures.

Of course, I’m sure there are other forms of Satanism you could check out.

i'd be really sad if the club was somehow shut down. Wouldn't be surprised if a Concerned Parents group rallied that it was a hate group or something, and if the wrong judge is at the wrong case, there goes freedom.

The TST would fight it which could end up being a positive thing, overall.
