Well...you're saying that "America is in a cold civil war" (as opposed to, but equivalent to, the 'hot' civil war we had in the 1860s).

It does seem that way at times.

I think we're going to get a totalitarian one-party state within this century, either right wing fascism or left wing pseudo-fascism, whoever seizes total power first. Democracy only works if each person generally likes the other, like a small hunter-gatherer tribe. If one side hates the other, that feeling's not going to change if X% of the country doesn't. One side will destroy the other once it has the chance.

I can see that, but in the long run the left will win because the left always wins over the long term. It can be a very long time though that's measured in decades and possibly even centuries in some cases. Trying to remain rooted in a time that's already gone isn't a recipe for success. That's not to say that the process can't get very ugly and very bloody, but in the long run the more progressive group will win out. I sincerely hope that we don't wind up back in the '60s and '70s with groups like the Weather Underground running around blowing things up.

Yes I think the class war is here to stay, as long as there's so much inequality. I don't know whether it could rightly be called a cold war or not. I suppose most of it isn't armed warfare yet, so maybe.

As an outsider, it seems that the extreme left is trying to totally destroy the fabric of Ameeriannn society.
I am NOT saying there are aspects of the US that don't deserve changing.

Interesting. Any idea how they're trying to do that?

Well, trying to dismantle the police force, as an example.
Stupid idea and black ppl are suffering because of the consequences of this pressure on the police.

I was lucky enough to watch a conversation between two sophistos who concluded that there will more likely be a war within the states than between them and that the military will likely end or mediate it, but I thought their assessment of its role in such a situation was naive.

In the USA, we don't even have a "Left." All that we have are normal people and right wing nutjobs.

About the only thing that it has in common with the Cold War is that they were both culture wars. The difference is that the Cold War was ever on the verge of spilling over into full scale intercontinental warfare with nuclear weapons on both sides.

There is no danger of nuclear weapons being used in the culture war between the right and the left. In fact I don't think the war between the left and right even fits the definition of a cold war because it's not on the verge of turning into a full scale conflict. Instead it will remain what it already is, a war of words.

Do you have an actual "left" in Australia?

The "defund the police" slogan as used by most of its advocates refers to an attempt to stabilise society by transferring some of the money from conventional policing to other initiatives which (it is argued) work better. Granted, there may be a few extremists who would simply zap the entire police force at a stroke, but it's hard to see how they would ever get the power to do that.

Strangely enough, it was the somewhat right-wing Tory government in the UK that cut police funding a few years ago, claiming that there was no correlation between the number of "bobbies on the beat" and crime prevention, and that "you can't arrest the crime problem away." Unfortunately the same Tory government were also cutting public service spending generally, so there was no intention of putting anything else in place of the cops. Their arguments were nothing to do with trying to directly make the country a better place for ordinary people to live in. The Tories had a safe parliamentary majority at the time. Since then they've become rather scared of losing elections, and they've started to return some of the money they took from the cops. Last time I looked, police corruption had become quite an issue, and the gov was vowing to root it out. But we've had inquiries and working parties about such problems for decades now, and nothing seems to have improved.
