What do you know of them?

What did the twelve disciples of Jesus generally do? In the bible, they are noted to have contributed to the driving out of demons, and were also involved in the healing of the sick. As well as being Jesus's friends.

Did they play any other roles?

To my knowledge, the names of the twelve disciples were:

Andrew
Bartholomew
James
James
John
Judas
Matthew
Peter
Philip
Simon
Thaddaeus
Thomas

I believe some of the names have alternate versions, in case anyone is confused with the list!

In Christian theology and ecclesiology, the apostles, particularly the Twelve Apostles (also known as the Twelve Disciples or simply the Twelve), were the primary disciples of Jesus according to the New Testament.  During the life and ministry of Jesus in the 1st century AD, the apostles were His closest followers and became the primary teachers of the gospel message of Jesus.

They spread the Gospel to different lands outside of the Middle East.

Andrew ("Peter's Brother")
Bartholomew ("Nathaniel")
James ("son of Alphaeus")
James ("son of Zebedee" and "brother of John") )
John ("son of Zebedee" and "brother of James")
Judas ("son of Simon Iscariot")
Matthew ("Levi" and "the Publican")
Peter ("Simon" and "Simon Peter")
Philip ("Philip")
Simon ("the Canaanite" and "the Zealot")
Thaddaeus ("Lebbaeus")
Thomas ("Didymus")

This was before Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus.  Judas was replaced by Matthias ("Tolmai").

This is an interesting tidbit.

Thank you for post in general, Fnord.

Then there was Paul ("Saul of Tarsus"), who once persecuted the early Christians, and whom Jesus Himself recruited as an apostle (Book of Acts, Chapter 9).  Fourteen of the 27 books in the New Testament have traditionally been attributed to Paul.

Why isn't he included in the typical list of 12?

Peter was crucified upsidedown. He personally requested it too.

That was supposedly because he wanted to show reverence to the lord being crucified the right way up....?

Not a lot, but I do know that da Vinci's Last Supper is a bit like the Ship of Theseus, I doubt any of da Vinci's work is still part of the original mural.

"The 12" refers only to the original Apostles.  Paul was recruited AFTER Matthias was selected to replace Judas Iscariot, who committed suicide.

Read your Bible.  It is all there.

I wasn't challenging you in my previous post Fnord. I was simply curious as to the answer to my question, thus asking you.

Paul was around just after Jesus's time as far as I am aware. He wrote the gospel from eyewitness statments of those who were still alive that he met, as in those days not many people could read or write, so it was important to hear events fro those who saw them when it happened.
Paul met the Lord Jesus after He had died and was resurected and had left thi earth, as Paul met him while travelling on a road. Those with Paul did not see Jesus. Paul had to be escorted as he was unable to see after the encounter due to the intense white brightness.
He was prayed for where he recieved his sight back.
Paul used to be Saul who was a Jewish sceptic and put many early Christians to death util Jesus appeared to him and said "Saul, why do you persecute me?" From that day he was called Paul, as he had such an amazing encounter and transformation that those who used to know him found it hard to believe! In fact, when one reads the Bible scriptures, when Paul was told to go to the early believers and meet with them, the believers were in fear of their lives as they thought it as some sort of trick as Paul had in is past used all sorts of methods to track down early Christians and kill them, as the "Religious" Jews who had not accepted Jesus (Religious as a word that is used as they adhered to the Jewish church traditions and had missed out on the move of God to bring about the Salvatio of mankind through Jesus Christ) happened to be doing all they can to prevent the Gospel from carrying on.
All throughout history right to this day there have been repeated attacks on true followers of Christ, and the more persecution that the church* comes under, the more the Christian faith grows (*Church as genuine believers. Not the buildings). One of the largest growth of the Christian faith seen today is in China where one can face death or torture to be a Christian. China is having a big revolution of hidden churches and the more their government and officials try to prevent this, the more people are turning to Christ and seeing genuine miriacles in their lives!
Today the church still has prophets, evangelists, teachers, apostles etc, etc, etc. God still uses people like He always has.
Miriacles still happen today just as they always have done. I am one example who has seen miriacles before my eyes, to the point where I can not deny Jesus.
The reason to life is that age old question. "What do ye do with Jesus?" Accept Him or reject Him? This is the test of what we are here for and what our lives are all about. There is no greater calling than this.

Yes. Had to go to work but was about to say that Paul was AFTER Christ died. So thats why he was not "one of the 12". The twelve hung out with Jesus and knew him personally.

Paul never met the guy. Except he did in a different way ...as a supernatural manifestation ( his conversion happened when Christ appeared to him as a blinding light and knocked Paul off his horse while Paul traveling down "the Road to Damascus" out of Judea and into Syria.

Thank you for clarifying, naturalplastic.

I'm a big fan of Peter.

I like my disciples countercultural.

No seriously. I attend(ed) St. Peter's.

I even have the necklace.
