Why is it such a big deal all of a sudden?

Haven't we always had the freedom to say whatever we like to who we like. To my recollection it's never been illegal to "call a spade a spade" if that's what you wanna do.

Why all of a sudden do I keep hearing folk bleating on and whinging about their right to free speech?

A lot of people who complain that they don't have free speech, are the type of people who express opinions that are not necessarily politically correct.

In some such scenarios, people are called out or attacked for having an unpopular opinion, often by social just warrior types.

In online spaces, such people can try to get others banned if they don't like their opinions and which may or may not infringe upon the interpretation of site rules.

Online websites are essentially privately owned spaces, so they are not obliged to provide spaces for genuine free speech anyway.

I sometimes think the world is going to turn itself inside out on a social level.

In my experience, people often complain about free speech when they express a bigoted opinion and then receive pushback for it. They want to say what they like, but they don’t want people who disagree with them to.

In other words, they want free speech for themselves but not for others.

For me if you say something that you know is going to offend someone then you should expect to have some kind of backlash.

Technically we have the freedom to say whatever we like to who we like, but are not free of the consequences of what we say, especially if it is illegal (i.e hate speech)

I think most people feel that way. It’s more like a small minority is very vocal when it comes to complaining about it. They don’t even seem to recognize the hypocrisy.

Usually they don't understand what freedom of speech actually means, and they're butthurt about receiving negative feedback.

How do you guys feel about all of the people losing their jobs, having job offers rescinded, being put on blacklists, etc because they came out in support of Hamas recently? Just people discovering that speech has consequences?

Alright, I'll bite first and await my 'The world according to Dox' retort.

It's people realizing that if you don't follow the narrative dictated by the people who hold power over your life there can be serious consequences.

Feel free to wait for other responses so you can group us together.

People can say what they want to say as long as they aren’t threatening people, but sometimes there will be consequences. I probably wouldn’t be eager to hire someone who was pro a terrorist organization if I were an employer.

Jews?

If the people who sacked, blacklisted and rescinded job offers were Jewish the answer would still be no.

Because you weren't paying attention before. People have been whining about free speech seemingly forever.

Freedom of Speech, with a few exceptions, only applies to what the government does. Businesses and individuals owe you no freedom of speech, especially in the form of consequences.
