what's up with criminals all going "i've found jesus"?

are people really that gullible or stupid? should it even matter since it doesn't change that they've committed a crime? it's not like as if claiming to find jesus and going to church automatically makes someone rehabilitated. in fact, it's quite the opposite normally...personality disorders and other mental defects often end up being covered up in a thick coating of piety and so the actual problem never gets fixed; merely just covered up.

michael vick is the most recent example i've seen of this...and in listening to and watching his press conference where he makes the announcement, it comes off as completely contrived and fake. is it really such an effective move that his lawyers would put him up to that?

They do it to make it look better for themselves, and to make the majority of society (Christian, that is) think that they've turned over a new leaf. If they were truly looking for Christ etc, they wouldn't have committed the crime in the first place, because the guilt that they would have carried would have told them it was wrong. Even common sense should have too; but because these idiots have neither guilt nor common sense, they are just wasting their time. Funny thing is, Christians always say if you accept Jesus, and are saved, you will enter heaven, regardless off what you have done. Sounds to me like an escape clause, but still pretty stupid.

Not much else to do in prison.

Well, these days I suppose there is plenty to do in American prisons. But that's besides the point.

One useful thing about Christianity is that it can be a very powerful motivator and self-esteem booster. When a guy's in jail and he's ashamed of who he is, and nobody wants to talk to him, he needs something to help him pull through and give him a reason to do his best.

I doubt in the sincerity of those who make public announcements of such things, but I believe most inmates who "find Jesus" are just trying to figure out how to redeem themselves in their own eyes and the eyes of others.

Well it might be to do with the fact that they are being targeted in prison. Just like the ring leader of the failed London bombers. Yes some people who are in prison are more impressionable.

True, claiming to have found jesus doesn't rehabilitate someone. And, whether or not they've found faith, they are still fully accountable for having broken the law. When Christians get pulled over for speeding, they don't claim Christ's grace as an excuse for their speeding. The Bible tells us to obey the laws of the nation we live in.

But it is very common for a convicted criminal to find true faith -- more common than for law-abiding "good people". It's those who know they are bad who are closest to the Gospel. The rest of mankind is deluded. "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us" (1 John 1:8 ). Hence, we are told to "Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering" (Hebrews 13:3). He's speaking of repentant prisoners.

I think many of them are just looking for sympathy the rest just trading one addiction for another.
