After appropriating the word "woke", conservative Americans have appropriated a new catchphrase, stolen from equity, diversity and inclusion

It's now replaced grooming, defund police, global elitists, CRt, BLM, antifa, trans, school boards and woke as a new dog whistle...new target, Kamala Harris

I don't think I ever want any more white, straight, cis, Christian males to be president or state governor.

Kate Abu used to work for Media Matters which was the target of right wing media law suits. Weird, conservatives breaching the US 1st amendment to silence Media Matters free speech.

Yes, DEI is the new woke. The sad part is there are legitimate reasons to criticize the way DEI is often being practiced. These criticisms will be ignored by many because it will be assumed whomever is critiquing DEI is using the term to cover up their bigotry.

Woke, /wōk/, adjective:
1. A term used originally among African-Americans to refer to being conscious of social issues and inequality
2. A descriptor used to describe something which someone, as a conservative, does not like for conservative reasons

Funny how different groups define the same thing, huh? Conservatives seem to get really uncomfortable and hostile any time someone suggest inequality is a problem and that maybe we should try to solve that problem.
They resent any suggestion that they benefit from inequality, yet seem completely certain that any attempts at equality might come at their expense.

I am unsure really how these things arise as Nuevo-vernacular on the air-waves and social media. this has happened pre-internet, another african-american term appropriated was "cool as a cat" or "cats" back in the day. More recently any exchange involving "Bro" or "bros", the pejorative term "karen", I'm sure "whatever!" also started with African Americans. I'm sure there are plenty more which have become "internet slang" that I don't know about. One recent one which was appropriated is "no diddy" which has replaced "no homo" for homophobic young males.

the journalist defines the appropriation by conservatives fairly well. I've started seeing comedians now use DEI which means its entered popular vernacular. As Kate Abu warns, the pejorative is going to have serious consequences for any person of colour (particularly black Americans) who are hired in workplaces where POCs are in a minority. POCs who have worked hard and earned their place through legitimate selection processes will now get labelled "DEI" by jealous co-workers or simply carry the tag because it feeds into an existing confirmation bias.

Yes, and they weaponise it. So the new narrative is progressives (let's call them democrats for this context) create a climate that is "woke" which means white cis-males are under attack and the next phase (now) in this fictional scenario is POCs get hired taking white people's jobs because they are all DEIs (not merit based). they are using this to both attack Kamala Harris and concurrently and literally any POC who has a job.

Another example of how DEI was weaponised was in the Students for fair admissions Vs Harvard. In that instance Asian parents and disgruntled/rejected Asian Ivy league applicants claimed DEI gave black/Latino students an unfair advantage. When legislation was passed forcing ivy leagues to change policies it actually made no difference to the ratio of Asian students which means it was simply propaganda
