I can't be the only person for who it makes sense that the death penalty could be something that some people would take over a lifetime spent in prison

I mean I know it can't really be an optional choice for the guilty party but I'm just wondering if anyone here can see my point of view

I'd take the death penalty over a life in prison.

But I suppose if I'm being punished then I don't get what I want, do I?

A lot of people say that, but nearly every person who is facing impending death sentence experiences significant anxiety over permanent darkness and ceasing to exist. I knew an ex-work colleague who developed brain cancer who had weeks to live. He chose to anesthetise himself for the remainder of his life rather than be conscious and contemplate his death.

If you'd prefer death over life in prison, it's your own responsibility to figure it out, and it's the state's job to stop you... unless you're eligible for MAID.

I would choose being locked up for life.

It's a no brainer.

I made this thread because she could have got mitigation quite easily but she chose to die instead

Personally I'd choose life in prison simply because it wouldn't be an issue for me And prison is just another way of life you can learn to live with

It’s not too uncommon for people to commit suicide in prison because the conditions are so bad. IMO, prison should be more humane, safe, and focused on rehabilitation whenever possible - in the US anyway; I can’t speak for too many other prison systems.

I enjoyed The Green Mile. Pure hokum, but still. Very touching how the innocent hero chose the death penalty because he was sick of seeing all the evil in the world. He ended up comforting the cops when they were crying their eyes out because they had to execute him.

I'd consider it if they promised not to make me shower with other men.

It annoys me in this country when people say that prison is like a holiday camp though because it's not somewhere I'd book to go for two weeks but if I'd committed a serious crime that endangered a person's life or caused a death then I would be more than happy to serve my time and get stuck in with my fellow people

I'd like to see them prove their point about holiday camps by doing a stretch in jail themselves.

I've never been inside so I don't know how it is these days, but I wouldn't want to find out the hard way. I would think the knock-on effects would be pretty rotten too. Doesn't look good on the CV. The gov tends to seize a lot of convicted people's assets these days and it's not limited to the money they might have stolen.

Those toilets in the middle of the cells don't look very private.

Most don't kill themselves or wind up murdered behind bars, so you can safely assume that they generally prefer to serve the sentence over being dead

I suspect that it's partially because you can at least develop a rich inner life and probably have at least some access to people or reading materials.
