I cannot understand how the profluvion of hugs and kisses between Olmert and Abbas can enhance the standing of Abbas among his people. Hugs abound between statesmen in these days, but not even Bush and Blair used to hug each other. Abbas and Olmert? After seven years of humiliation of Palestinians and heaps of corpses on bothe sides (but always in a ratio o 1 to 10 palestinians (mostly civilians) killed how should be possible to catch up the time lost, the victims to reach an agreeement that would certainly be more unfavorable to Palestinians than Oslo. On one side there is a worn out leadership who is responsible for a policy of repression and nothing else (the wall, Lebanon, Gaza occupied every other month, on the other a discredited representative of a corrupt post-Arafat regime. What deal is possible?

Skeptical that much will come from the talks, but for different reasons.

Yeah, its a really sad situation and if we've learned anything - DON'T OFFER TWO DIFFERENT GROUPS OF PEOPLE THE SAME LAND AND TELL EACH THAT ITS ALL THEIRS.

The talks are a travesty. The Palestinians have proven through their actions that they are vile savages undeserving of a state. Abbas talks peace to stupid leftists in English and calls for the extermination of all Jews in arabic to his followers.

Then why does Olmert appear with Abbas and tell the world that they are working towards peace? Is Olmert a fool, or is he a liar? Or maybe many in Israel and the West see Abbas as a moderate leader - still on the other side, still an enemy, but someone who they might work with?

they had a meeting to agree to have future meetings. I say it was a good first step, but way below anyone's expectation. You don't bring 40 countries together like that for a photo op, and nice press statement.

I believe you need France and England involved since it was their mess in the beginning, and stop playing childish games. You cannot have peace in Gaza without talking to Hamas. And if you try to force peace, well then thats an oxymoron.

I hope something comes out of all this, but I don't expect much.

Olmert is a fool and Abbas is a liar who is happy to use Olmert as a tool.

These talks are a fraud, meant to boost Bush's legacy. Obviously when you hold peace talks, but only invite one of the two warring factions, it is impossible to achieve success.

This conflict's way older than Bush though, it goes all the way back to WWI and it'll probably take generations upon generations to unravel. All people can really do is just keep trying.

Holding peace talks where you only invite one of the warring factions to attend can hardly be considered "trying."

Only one? Not sure I follow what your saying with that. If you mean the heads of Hamas or the PLO there's no point - they have no desire whatsoever to have peace.
