First off, let me just say that I'm not out to convert anyone. I would just like to offer my reason for believing in God when reason, logic, and society in general tell me not to.
For most of my life, I have been plagued with auditory hallucinations--that is, I hear voices in my head. Not an AS symptom, I know, but it's the truth. When I was younger I was able to ignore it most of the time, but in the last five years it has gotten worse. It got to the point where I required medication, which so far has helped, but only a little. There are some days where just thinking clearly is a struggle.
Now, a nearby town (Litchfield, CT) has a shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes (which is one of The Virgin Mary's many titles). One of its features is a path on a hill which features the Stations of the Cross, a devotion that is in remembrance of the steps taken by Jesus on the way to his crucifixion. I went there with my family about three years ago, and while they stayed behind to say the Rosary, I walked the path of the Stations.
As I walked along the path, I became increasingly aware that my mind was oddly still. Gradually, it occurred to me that my mind was completely quiet. There were no disturbances whatsoever--no voices, no random thoughts racing through my head, no nothing. For practically the entire twenty minute walk, my mind was crystal clear. For a few fleeting moments, I was completely at peace.
Say what you will, but I'm convinced that it was God who made this moment of peace possible. What else could it be? And I'll admit that I have my doubts sometimes. But when those doubts arise in my mind, I think back to that day when my mind was clear, and it reminds me that God exists, and He is good.

Well, it only happened that one time. I've gone back a few times and it hasn't had that effect. Still, that one time brought me consolation, if only for a short while.
