Should the U.S. peacefully annex Mexico?
...to become our 51st state?
Getting past the "how-dare-you"s, do you think the end net result of the U.S. adding Mexico as a state
would be more positive for all concerned than the current climate of rampant illegal immigration
from the hunger- and poverty-stricken third-world country of Mexico, or more negative?
Advantages:
1. It would solve the illegal immigration problem once and for all.
2. It would automatically make all Mexicans United States citizens -- both those who risk their lives
to get here and those who can only dream of being here.
3. Once it's governed by our laws, Mexico's economy would skyrocket from its present sorry state
to equal that of the leader of the free world.
4. Many other countries wish America would make them this same deal, but Mexico is lucky enough
to be already contigious with our mainland, and therefore adding them as a state would be relatively easy
and natural. (Makes more sense than our courting Puerto Rico.)
Disadvantages:
1. Culture shock.
2. Whites would be made an extreme minority, but blunting that disadvantage would be
the fact that there would be much more intermariage between hispanics and whites, which would
effectively create a new racial breed and status.
Thoughts?

Sure. We can do anything. Just look at Vietnam and Iraq - solid proof of the US exceptionalist ideals.
Makes sense to me. I think we owe them one.
Well, that wouldn't make nearly as much sense, since Mexico is right here,
and they're the ones constantly knocking at our door to get in.
and is clearly and deeply dependent on us.
Canada might get envious and want in, though, and I think we should consider
their request if they make one.
1. Lots of Mexicans clearly-as-can-be want into the U.S.
2. Lots of Mexicans are starving, while the U.S. has the greatest economy in the world.
3. This illegal immigration thing is, I believe, slowly tearing us apart.
Therefore, why not solve both Mexico's and America's problems all at once?
Is it because it's too easy?
Pandabear: Why must the two countries remain at odds with each other?
Is that more "natural" to you somehow? I don't get it.
If there is an opportunity at peace, shouldn't we take it?
But that's my question: Is there an opportunity for mutual betterment here?

No because that will give us more problems to deal with. Also it can hurt our economy with how bad their economy is at the moment. It just create more problems to deal with along with our problems.

Well, sure, but the beauty increase would more than make up for that.
Plus, short guys like me wouldn't feel short anymore.

Well, but that's the great thing about it: Their ecomony will become ours,
governed by our laws,
and therefore it will eventually be thoroughly repaired.

Wouldn't it be more realistic to start off with a few simple treaties directed toward an affair similar to that of the European Union prior to their discussions of implementing a constitution? Seriously, it would have quite the same effect, and, frankly, I think it's the only probable way for us to preserve the effectiveness of our currency. We should initiate a similar such arrangement with Canada while we're still on top. It would set a precedent for other continents to follow suit, and this would bring some much-needed stability to global politics.
Okay, that sounds like a better formulation of the idea.
(The EU will probably be like: "Ga! They're adding even more states! Just when we were catching up to them, too.")

Are you going to ask them first? (Them the people, not them the government.)

Of course! You think they'd say no??? "Would you like to stop starving due to your inefficient and thoughly-corrupt government, or would you like to remain starving under them?"
Gee, I wonder what they'll answer, seeing as how they're risking their lives in droves every single day just to come here!

the way ragtime proposes the issue is kinda on the level of absurdity but in the end, the results would be positive in the terms of fixing immigration problems and elevating the quality of life for those in mexico.
the negative would be no one appreciates an invasion or anything like that and mexico is culturally very patriarchal and very proud. those two factors would lead to a very messy and bad integration if such a thing were attempted.
i'd rather just get it fixed through diplomatic harassing of the mexican government to fix their broken government and law enforcement.
edit: i voted happy belated cinco de mayo.

Some are. Plenty arent. Besides which, Europe has been peacefully annexing the UK for years, and no-one asked us.
Also, what you speak of is effectively colonialism and empire building, and after the fuss you kicked up about OUR empires, it would be the height of bad taste to start your own.

Raggy, America doesn't have the "greatest economy in the world." Several nations have higher per capita GDPs. And our current laws certainly won't do much to rebuild Mexico's economy when those same laws are currently wreaking havoc on our own economy. Mexico's a mess, but America isn't necessarily a utopia, and simply being ruled by us won't automatically make Mexicans any better off.
