Hullabaloo over Rev. Wright: playing the race-card

The uproar that I witnessed over Reverend Wright's famous sermons looked more like dogs falling upon a banquet than any genuine outrage. I've said elsewhere that this reaction was far out of proportion to their actual significance. Here, I'm just calling it out for what it is: a bunch of politically motivated rabble-rousers saw an opportunity, and they jumped on it for all they were worth, hoping the mob would burn a few houses down before anyone noticed what they were doing.

I was going to call this "race baiting," but it doesn't seem quite accurate. It just looks like a new way for the Right-wing to get away with playing the race-card. Another day, another example of dirty politics from the political Right. It seems to be the only form of innovation they're interested in.

Aside from argument by verbal negation, I have never heard of these hate rallies. Ja, would you mind backing up your statement? Just making a statement doesn't prove anything, we'd like to know where to find this info and how true it is.

He's a right-wing demagogue. He doesn't deal in truth. What do you think drove my disaffiliation with conservatism? A passionate love for taxes? Some adolescent crush on Al Sharpton? I just want nothing to do with these creeps. The so-called "third-way" is an attempt to construct a more tolerable alternative to being associated with these "any lie to win" doohickeys. Think of them like those evangelicals who think it's okay to tell bald-faced lies or sell gross distortions of Scripture if they think it will get people to believe in Jesus. They're the same ilk. The so-called "New Democrats" would have simply joined the Republican Party if the Republican Party were something better than a freaking criminal gang. Liberals call them "conservative-lite" for a reason.

Obama cleared this up with his speech he gave on race. End of story.

Otherwise, Rev. Wright wasn't exactly wrong. We haven't treated our people well. His frustration is just a symptom of the bigger problems that have infected and grown in our society, thanks to the current administration.

Why do we have to stress that we "don't condone his comments," though? Hey, it's a fact: I don't find his rhetoric particularly savory. I shouldn't have to say so, however, every time I express my views on this subject. An equally zealous black populist has as much right as me to express his or her views on the issues affecting this country. Furthermore, his or her views are significantly more legitimate than those of the slimeball demagogues that are the subject of this thread.

If another candidate had a pastor who preached the ideologies of the KKK, which the KKK view as correct, the candidate and his/her supporters would surely have to continually repeat that the candidate doesn't share views with said pastor in order to be perceived as politically correct.

It's like saying, "this is how it is even though I don't like it, please don't attack me for their sake."

I don't think any of this was politically motivated. The comments made by Reverend Wright are important because Obama has been attending his church for 20 years which implies that he supports him.

I don't know of any racist comments made by Rev Wright. All I read about is that Rev Wright thinks the government is racist for being tough on crime. For example, he condemned America as racist because of laws imposing longer sentences for third time felons (which I think is odd because the law mostly applied in CA which is only 5% black).

I think the important question is - Will Obama pass racist laws? For example, does Obama support forcing employers to hire less qualified blacks over more qualified whites to help get blacks good jobs, a policy called Affirmative Action?

I'm worried because Obama already said he wants to reduce prison sentences for black criminals because he says they are racist.

Marijuana - least dangerous, least prison time of popular illegal drugs
cocaine - more dangerous, more prison time
crack cocaine - even more dangerous, even longer prison time

Obama stated that sentences for selling or possessing crack cocaine should be reduced because he says the additional prison time for crack cocaine offenses is racist. Obama says the longer sentences were passed because it is mostly blacks who use crack cocaine and our racist government wants to lock up black people. However, Obama doesn't think longer sentences for cocaine compared to marijuana is due to racism against white people (who are more likely to use cocaine). The way I see it, a vote for Obama = soft on black crime (but not white crime). I think the liberals already reduced the sentences for crack cocaine users but I think this is a good example of what to expect if he is elected.

BTW, I'm not just anti-Obama
Clinton = socialism/communism, government mandated healthcare (meaning you will be forced to purchase insurance (paid through a mandatory income tax hike) that the government chooses instead of having the freedom to purchase what you want and not purchase what you don't want)

McCain = pro-war candidate. Stay the course in Iraq + maybe attack Iran and maybe Syria if he can get away with it

Rev. Wright is a racist bastard, along with Obama, another typical racist black politician. You cannot tell me he was stupid enough not to know what his pastor was saying. If he really cared about this country like he claims he does, he should have left the church. Doesn't mean they couldn't be friends.

And Obama's speech just made things worse, IMO. FAR from the end of the story. "Typical white person," my ass! I'd be more scared of a group of white skinheads than a group of black gangsters.

I'd love to have a black president, but not your garden-variety "I H8 WHITE PPL" politician, who thinks that anything that harms black people, no matter how much the individual f****d up, is wrong.

From what I've read, the more outrageous quotes from Rev. Wright have been taken out of context.

Personally, I don't see why people are outraged over this and not over John McCain seeking endorsement from a man who envisions a "second Holocaust" for the Jews after Jesus comes back and blames them for the Holocaust and has made anti-Catholic and anti-Muslim remarks.
