If another candidate had a pastor who preached the ideologies of the KKK, which the KKK view as correct, the candidate and his/her supporters would surely have to continually repeat that the candidate doesn't share views with said pastor in order to be perceived as politically correct.
It's like saying, "this is how it is even though I don't like it, please don't attack me for their sake."
