Why is anything with nude people 'not suitable for minors', both when there is sex and not? Why is pornography not suitable for minors? Why is yelling at someone "I f****d YOUR MOTHER! THEN WE ALL CAME INSIDE HER f*****g c**t!" suitable, when 'making love' is not? ( Do note- The difference between making love and f*****g, is that when making love, you do it for the other person/s. )

Oh, worth mentioning, Violence=Good, Love=Bad. Seems to be the general message of today. Yay gore.

Just a cultural thing. A lot of people in the world used to walk around naked, until missionaries came.

What about genital names? They are censored, yet the name is correct.

I think it is because we live together with all kind of people, and we don't want to be confronted to hear about those subjects when totally unappropriate people are around. If any one can talk about anything at any time, then there is not much control possible.

example : an ugly fat man of 50 (who hasn't had sex for a long time) starts a conversation with 16 year old girl just for the kick of it and completely respectless.
Now this is hard to avoid when there is no taboo, the girl is at that point almost obligated to listen to this kind of talk, which can be extremely unpleasant.

so the taboo is to avoid that people who do not feel like being confronted with unpleasant verbal images are protected.

You also see that under certain circumstances people break the taboo (like when men of same age are together, or a few good friends talking, or between certain family members, etc).

personnaly i think it is also a good thing to not overload young people with sexual images, vocabulary, ideas, etc, so that they can make up there own at due time. (but of course not all people are alike and some like extern visual information more than others)

Well I'm for limiting the sexual innuendo in front of children (especially if they won't get it)... Profanity, on the other hand, is just how people speak... it gets the point across a whole lot faster and more effectively than other forms of communication. I could be covertly pissed off for weeks, rail on someone for 15 mins. or just call him a Motherf***er and be done with it... but no, we have to protect minds that are sensitive to that...

Also, for those religiously concerned, both cases would be equally bad, since there's the "not loving your neighbor" going on, but technically, even for those that are extremely rule-bound to the Bible, saying most profanity wouldn't break any commandments... the rules about swearing are about taking oaths, not about profanity, so technically only terms such as "g-ddammit" would be prohibited... and even then God technically isn't His name, but one of the many "names" attached by humans to avoid breaking the Third Commandment, like Lord, Adonai (Hebrew word for Lord), etc... since the word "god" is Germanic in origin, it is impossible to have referred to Him originally...

But what harm is done to the child, if there is talk of sex infront of it? The child will neither care, nor understand. And, as always, if someone comes to you and talks to you, you can always say that you do not wish to speak with them.

It has nothing to do with Christianity. It is a holdover from Freud and Freudian theories about childhood development.

So those were actually Freudian missionaries, who went around the world to instruct people to put clothes on?

That didn't have anything to do with shielding children from sexuality. Those were Western chauvinist attempts to force a particular idea of civilization on to cultures subjected by colonialism. And this was being done in what are now Third World countries. These missionaries obviously had nothing to do with modern attitudes towards sexuality and childhood in the United States.

Western society views on sex, when it comes to taboos and morality, certainly has a lot to do with Christianity.

That isn't the topic. The topic is 'erotic things' not being suitable for minors.

Well the idea is to protect young'ns' "purity". And, if it were at all possible to relax the pressure for getting in the mating rat race and get people to direct their energies elsewhere, I would be *totally* for it; however, it doesn't seem to work...

I mean, the USA has a strong puritan strain that went against sexeh stuff even for adults for a while.

More like the adult part of it. As anyone who's engaged in sex, you know it can drive you crazy, even momentarily. It has a lot of side effects (love, pregnancy, a preference for chocolate...;), and should actually be taken under an informed guidance and serious thought.

Children do not have the mindset or reasoning ability to form an adult opinion on this matter. (I know, some precocious little wunderkind probably could have the moves down by 8, but laws are written for average people...that's life)

Believe me, with children and grandchildren underfoot, you find yourself self-censoring, and protecting children from images and behavior which they don't understand, or might misinterpret.

It's all really nitpicking on my part anyway. Freudianism and Cristianity are two sides to the same dualism.
