...enlightenment. Yes, its true, I've never taken drugs before but I have read books by terrence Mkenna, dr. timothy leary and others. I don't use drugs but I have lucid dreams where I get answers from 'god' as you would call him to solve my problems and it has helped my AS alot.

do you think it is the answer?

I used to use hallucinigens in my younger days. I never felt as enlightened as a lot of people around me did. It was just fun for me.

However, I've heard from quite a few aspie types, even now, who say it's really helpful for them.

They did some autism experiements with LSD in the 60's. They reported positive results.

DMT is said to occur in the human brain - if true, that pretty much explains the phenomenon of religious experience in neurological terms.

IMO entheogens are an extremely powerful spiritual catalyst, but you dont really need them. Although obviously they make it much more likely that a persons life will go in a particular direction.

Heya -
I work in a hospital, so I see the negative sides of drugs pretty exclusively. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I've seen people screaming uncontrolably and thrashing in their beds so that they had to be tied down to keep them from harming themselves; I've seen people blow out their long term memory (ie, longer than about 5 seconds); I've seen people go into organ failure. Don't do it. There's a good chance you'll regret it.

I agree. They are unpredictable, and I am not aware that they are any better than meditation, prayer, dreaming, lucid dreaming, and other paths.

Besides unpredicatble, they can be dangerous. LSD, for instance, is stored in fatty tissue and can be 'released' when you least expect it. You can 'trip' weeks or even months later, even if you're not taking it anymore. Imagine tripping and driving; not good.

I think I had flashbacks through the years but it didn't mess me up. I saw traces when I waved my hand and thought, this must be some old LSD being released from some fat cell. That was about it.

However, now you're making me wonder about what happens when LSD is released while someone is pregnant. LSD is made from a powerful abortificant. It's something you don't want to take when pregnant.

No, LSD is not stored in fatty tissues. THC in marijuana is, though there is no evidence that it is suddenly released - it would happen gradually if a person was fasting, or very gradually otherwise.

There is no scientific evidence of flashbacks. What one person described (flashes of light) are common in people with migraines, even if they never used the drug.

The old idea that LSD scrambles chromosomes is also false - at similar dosages, orange juice and aspirin will interfere with chromosomes in a test tube. It could cause developmental problems in a fetus, or premature birth by stimulating uterine contractions.

The big issues are related to the mind and safety - a bad trip leading to ptsd or an accident, the precipitation of psychosis or depression in people that are susceptible, burn-out in people that take it too many times.

People tried a lot of short cuts in the 60's. The only way to spiritual enlightenment is hard work. Get a book on meditation techniques and use the ones that work for you. Be open-minded and compassionate. Try to understand yourself and the people around you. Learn to be satisfied with what you have. Discuss what you think and think about what you discussed. Don't shrink from the hard questions. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and admit them.

If you understand your own mind and motivations you will understand everyone else's, too. You can't deny or push away the parts of yourself you don't like - that's a real split personality. Love your cooties as much as your stars, then you love yourself and you can love others.

Be patient. Things take as long or as much as they need. Nature abhors an arrogant fool.

Draw your own conclusions and don't be afraid to change your entire belief system if YOU find a good reason; but don't give it away for shallow, knee-jerk arguments from a shyster.

Ask God the hard questions. He's up to any of them. You have the right to ask. He has the right to answer in His way, not yours. It may be immediate, it may take years, it may be never. Accept the time it takes, but be sure the answer fits what you know. If not, ask why. If it does, ask why.

There are no masters. Everyone is a student. Some just have more experience. Have fun.

From comparing accounts of meditation and entheogen use, they both seem to lead to the same place, but the drugs appear to take a far more colourful and adventerous route; You may explore spirit realms, encountering extra-dimensional lifeforms (DMT elves for instance. 'lady salvia') and witness the composition of the matrix, perhaps not with any more clarity, but from many different perspectives. Although, whilst in the fully enlightened state, i guess the route taken would be an irrelevance.

I disagree that any adventure perceived while high on drugs has anything to do with real enlightenment. It's a mirage that takes place nowhere other than in one's own imagination.

Who's to say that life itself is not an imagination or dream? Define "real enlightenment".

I think drugs can't be ruled out as a route to enlightenment. They also can't be ruled out as a way of anesthetising ourselves against what may be a harsh reality we live in.

If you are going to experiment, which I'm not suggesting you should, then just be sure you know what you're ingesting. Some so-called natural hallucinogens can kill you, for example people have died quite recently from ingesting jimsonweed (datura). Also others have died from consuming certain fungi that they mistook for psilocybin shrooms, but which were actually Galerina species.
I've also actually met people who think Amanita Muscaria are hallucinogenic, but actually they contain nerve toxins.

Amanita muscraia require a preparing before consumption, in order to convert ibotenic acid into muscimol.
