How is that bad?

The income's what I would worry about.

^^ believe me, if you live one of those countries , the income would be your last concern. You would rather worry about your basic human rights.

Congo sounds worse than Moldova, rape by militiamen is systematic and there are cases of women raped so brutally so many times that they're left permanently unable to walk, etc. The Taliban-controlled parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan must be pretty bad as well. Of stable, fairly wealthy countries I imagine Saudi Arabia must be the worst. Among developed democracies, Japan's probably the worst.

Haiti is listed as having a 57% literacy rate for women. Wiki gives the average of the country as 54.8% and another site gives the average for men as the same.
Just to be even handed, for the rest of them:
Yemen: Male: 70.5 v Female 30
Sierra Leone: 39.8 v 20.5
Nepal: 62.7 v 34.9
Papua New Guinea: 71.1 v 57.7

Now, the asymmetry is very favorable to their thesis in all of these (save Haiti and Moldova), which makes me wonder why they felt the need not to give the female literacy rate in comparison to the male, because otherwise the statistic is meaningless if we're talking about women's rights. My only guesses are that they're lazy (unless I wanted to be really cynical and say they wanted to make the situation look more dire than it is, because I'm guessing most people's reactions when they see a 20 some odd percent literacy rate in Sierra Leone is "OMG").

No, Moldova is highly literate.

Wow! Who said that? I knew the zen buddhist one about truth being a ladder which throw away after climbing it, but that one is good too.

I would say any country that has bad sanitation is bad for women. They are far more likely to die in childbirth, less likely to raise children to maturity and more likely to have numerous pregnancies because they lose so many children at a young age.
