Freedom is being liberated from the confines of restricting regulation, being able to express yourself, your religion and opinion, wear what you want say, what you want to do and live the way you want to live, so long as that lifestyle is not harmful to others.
In America today, thanks to the Patriot Act which is blatantly unconstitutional if you read the actual act....which as an American you are entitled to a copy from the library of congress...
It limits freedom of both speech and press, and allows people to be arrested for just saying they don't like the governement...the Governement has MANY civil rights cases on their hands for that very reason...
It would be a good acti if it was used only to investigate ACTUAL SUSPECTS...senior citizens have been taken in for questioning because they say things about how the government is sending the country to hell...
The republic...which is the kind of government America has, is fundamentally flawed....though if we were an actual democracy it would also be flawed...just in different ways...
this is what I get for taking Political Science.....so in conclusion, there is no such thing as democracy, and never was. There was always some restriction and the government is only making it worse. At least that's what I think.

Freedom is an illusion created by the ruling elite to keep the proles in their place.

Having said that, at least you guys have the right to bear arms. Perhaps that will, to an extent, prevent your rulers stepping too far over the mark. Here, at Airstrip One, we're at the mercy of Big Brother Blair. The illusion of freedom's wearing rather thin.

I wouldn't get too hung up over the freedom and democracy thing. The older you get, the more you realise you're just a number; nothing you do or say has any relevance. Voting is a waste of time because the nature of the system means there will rarely be any substantial difference between the policies of the main political groups - all part of the deceit.

That was interesting, AntiEverything. I can't say that Blairs government have screwed everything up, because they haven't; what they have done is capitalised on changes made by the Tories, and taken the credit. Not that I think the Tories are paragons of virtue, but credit where credit's due! The favourable economic conditions we have experienced under Labour are not caused by Labour. The groundwork was done by the Tories. A certain element is, also, due to good ol' lady luck, and of course Labour do deserve some praise for not embarking on their normal profligacy too early; though, no doubt that'll not last into their next term.

Anyway, what I really object to is the Blair government's obsession with control and regulation. You see, I'd like to just get on with my life without some tosser from Westminster sticking his self-righteous hypocritical nose into everything I do. You mentioned those technological abominations: speed cameras. This is the sort of thing I'm talking about. We can't be trusted to make decisions on safe driving speeds ourselves, so in their infinite wisdom our masters fine us, or revoke our driving licences, for breaking a speed limit by 5mph at 2 in the morning  . I remember watching an item on the news a while back. Some guy had been murdered, the reporter was standing in a Street surrounded by brightly painted speed and traffic light cameras, reporting on the inability of the police to catch the murderer. The irony was beautiful  .

I could go on about the Inland Revenue, Health and Safety Executive etc., all part of the huge bureaucracy designed to stifle any residual ability the population has to think for itself, but it would be frightfully boring. And on the subject of bureaucracy, how about the EU. Hey, if Blair and co. really mess things up big time there's always a £200k pa job over in Euroland waiting!

But, nothing's going to change much; too many with vested interests - a self-perpetuating web of corruption; people being people. Best to try to ignore it, coz the only way you get to be part of the sytem is to be as corrupt and duplicitous as the others.

I'm in danger of rambling on incoherently; best ask you what you think of this ID card thing, AntiEverything?

(Title quote) [quote=SleepingJimmy]What is Freedom & Democracy?[quote]

Freedom is to be able to do whatever you want. All people in this world can do whatever they want, but they have to face the consequences of their actions.

Democracy is to be able to vote for a 'leader'. This is the small part of democracy.
The big part is to learn what your rights are (laws of society included) and use the them to your advantage.
