funny article from the commies' side.

"Georgian troops attempted to storm the city much as Hitler‘s Panzer divisions blazed through Europe."

They're not commies anymore, skafather84, although I appreciate such minor detail takes its time to trickle-down to the Yank proletariat. I don't really see the funny side either, especially after watching the anti-Russian crap broadcast on various Yank and British news channels recently.

The most bizarre thing of late was a statement from your great leader, Bush. He described Russia's actions as "disproportionate". Considering the tens of thousands killed in Iraq and Afghanistan on his behest, half-way round the world from the USA, Russians sorting out some business on their own doorstep is quite reasonable and proportionate. Moreover, if he wasn't so obviously trying to make the Black Sea into an American lake, none of this may have happened in the first place.

Considering this is about the, idk,ωth time I've heard someone say "America can't talk!" in reference to this debate, I'm going to take this moment to point out (once and for all) crying "hypocrisy" is tantamount to an ad hominem. The US is something of a political powerhouse; it's going to make statements on world issues as a matter of course, and saying that it shouldn't doesn't constitute a meaningful commentary on the situation, much less an original critique that we haven't all heard before. Whether or not the Russian response is appropriate ought to be dealt with on the merits of the situation and the premises of those making the arguments.

Oh, and what I read of the Pravda article didn't look that bad. I mean, I could picture that kind of language in the NY Post...

Agreed, ascan. Alot of unfair anti-Russian, pro-Georgian bias, and it's Russian business anyway. It's not some genocide, it's a conventional war. Typical western political and media reaction, though. Big Bad Russia attacks innocent neighbour!! ! Yeah right.

I think that Georgia is to blame for all this. It drew HUGE attention to the conflict by attacking at the start of the Olympics, apparently trying to get in a blow whilst Putin was absent. Russia was justified to intervene when its own border security was at stake. Not to mention that Russian forces were allegedly attacked.

I never said that. I may have implied it, and to have done so was quite reasonable within the context of the discussion to that point. The original poster linked to an item he thought funny, so I informed him of something I found bizarre. So, you see, twoshots, there really is no need for you to lecture us on the finer points of philosophical debate.

I think blame can be cast quite widely, Anubis. The politicians of both sides, as well as those of the US and Europe, should all get a share. It's for their careers that thousands die -- nobody else will benefit.

fine: SOUTH ossetia is georgian land.

the russians certainly do seem keen on capturing the area, though.

wouldn't have anything to do with the oil pipeline running through there, would it?

Well, yes and no. The statement needs to be expanded, skafather84. I suggest you do yet more research and come back with a response that convinces me you've got to grips with the basics.

Russia is an aggressor. I do not see how others cannot see what is easily visible. But then again it is not like Russia is a bad guy, after all it deals peacefully with the former soviet blocs.
