Just saw a segment on Animal planet where people flew paper doves on the UN's day of peace and how they thought those paper doves were actually making an impact. Personally, I don't believe world peace is acheivable. Human nature does not allow it we are too selfish. For as long as there is power and money to be had in this world people will fight to get it. All it take is a conflict of interests and war can break out. Can we limit conflict? yeah to a point but we can't completely get rid of it. The idea of World Peace is nothing but wishful thinking in my opinion.

I think world peace would happen if 1 country conquered all.. Or all wiped each other out.

World peace is infinitely achievable.

But we must rid ourselves of the shackles of mysticism and tribal thinking and embrace reason and individuality.

The good variant of world peace is achievable if we follow Izaak's suggestion to a good extent. I do assume that Izaak's suggestion ultimately ends up being trade. Trade promotes peace by tying human self-interest to the interests of others.

The bad variant of world peace would be the rise of a world government I would think, as such an organization would exist to assume power into itself and without necessarily seeking totalitarianism would likely find it.

The idea of continual war is not hard to imagine, but the issue is that in order for that view to hold there would also have to be continual poverty.

Selfishness should actually be the greatest promoter of peace, what selfish person martyrs themself?

The issue isn't money and power so much as money and power easily attained through war. The level of wealth and power in the world has been increasing for a long time, but the number of major wars has been declining amongst those with the most wealth and power. I would say that this is because stored capital makes war less beneficial in comparison to trade.

In a game of chess, all pieces may be sacrificed except the king. The rest are peons.

I would say sinful human nature precludes peace.

Exactly the idea that man is basically good has yet to demonstrate itself. People have tried time and again to create "perfect" societies and they all fail. People look out for themselves first and then they might consider others but only once their own needs have been met...

Life is not a game of chess.
And people are not peons, or pawns for that matter.

I hope so. The world (or at least a large part of it) is already more peaceful than it was 1000 years ago, despite all the claims that everything is going to hell. Who knows, maybe in another 1000 years we will have actual world peace. There will probably always be minor conflicts, murders, terrorists etc, but wars sanctioned by nations might become a thing of the past.

Yes, but if the pawns don't want to be sacrificed then who will be sacrificed? Not only that, but if there is not much to gain from playing chess and much to lose then who will sit down for the match?
