During the time of Christ and in the early years of the Church (prior to establishment of New Testament canon, as in which documents were legit and not gnostic [or ψευδωνυμου γνωσεως "pseudonumou gnoseos" as called in 1st Timothy 6:20 "science falsely so called" in the KJV where "science" then meant "knowledge" in general]) the Scriptures used and referred to by Christ and the Apostles was the Tanakh/Old Testament. The Gospel of Matthew points out the prophecies in the Old Testament that were fulfilled in the life of Christ for example. Even Jesus said that,
"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." Matthew 5:17-18
