Given that I believe there is a complete lack of tangible evidence for the existence of god; I am curious why people believe in the existence of a supreme being.

It would be nice if this post does not turn into a Atheist vs Theist flame war

i believe in god but i think hes an alien. i think the majority of people believe in something magical they cant see or understand because they wanna feel good and need much coxing in life to make it all worth while so of course there has to be an invisible god who loves them and by the way they want into heaven

I don't believe in god because the lack of belief has an unmistakeably positive effect on my life.

Why do people stop believing in Santa, but still believe in God? I have that question.
Maybe because they have tangible evidence that Santa does not exist, but cannot disprove God.
I don't like the 'it's real because you can't disprove it' argument because nobody can disprove the green leprechauns living in my sock drawer. (At least you people online can't)

Or if you claimed the leprechauns are invisible and intangible (like god) then even if they dig through your sock drawer they still can't disprove it.

hey I have those too, they don't seem to be bothered by any parasite repellent I spray on them!

seriously though, I'm just as baffled as you are. Santa seems to be a lot cooler dude than all the Gods put together. he might not be my favourite dude in the world but I'd definitely rather make an acquaintance with him than with the rest of the imaginary lot (maybe apart from the Flying Spaghetti Monster, I love Italian food).

There are several arguments that have been used to justify the existence of some supreme being; the one which seems strongest to me is the cosmological argument. To get from there to a specific God is comparative theology.

I don't believe in god because lack of belief would have an unmistakeably positive effect on the world.............

Even Nietzsche admitted that atheism introduces a moral crisis into society.

only because they were never tought an alternative world without gods. they have no clue how to be a decent person and take care of themselves and their beloved ones...

they need the authority and the rules to justify everything... and to be sure that other people have to live by the same rules.

as stated above:

a world full of aspies wouldn't turn into anarchie or a moral crisis.... only a world full of NTs will. ;-)

Enough Aspie supremacism. I got bored of it quite a while ago, and in case you hadn't noticed, there are a number of Aspie posters here who are religious.

But that doesn't necessarily mean those aspie posters would go ape crazy without their religion.

He doesn't have evidence that aspies wouldn't have a problem with a loss of religion but you don't have evidence that they would either so the two arguments basically cancel each other out.

Now back to your regularly scheduled debate.

Most of us know the reasons not to believe in God; can we try to keep this post to why do you believe in god.

@ ouinon, you have said that your belief in God has made an unmistakable effect upon your life. so is it the belief or God that has had the effect

@ Orwell could you extrapolate a little further.

@ Richard Benson - why?
