But that doesn't mean that I necessarily match up with the historical Eric Arthur Blair on every single possible issue. Nor (NB) do I match up with what any given angsty twit believes Orwell probably believed. I have taken flak for being sceptical in relation to various conspiracy theories, when there's not really any reason to believe George Orwell would have been a "9/11 Truther," or bought into the vaccine-autism theory, or believed that someone as utterly incompetent as Bush was going to declare marshal law and round everyone up into concentration camps. He distrusted authority, but I haven't seen all that much evidence that he was an idiot, so I don't think I'm sullying his name with my scepticism. I've been slammed for being a Christian, when Orwell was an atheist. So what? I can believe whatever the hell I want, and I can admire people whose theological views do not match mine. I admire many historical figures who did not believe in the same religion I follow. I can also admire the literary accomplishments of men who had different political or religious views than me. I may not be an atheist, but a lot of atheists in the first half of the twentieth century wrote really good books. Conversely, would anyone maintain that atheists aren't allowed to be Lord of the Rings fans because Tolkien was Christian? No, certainly not. I know a few liberals who love Ayn Rand's writing simply for its literary merit, though they disagree passionately with Rand's politics.

I was feeling cynical when I registered here, and that is a large part of why I chose the name I did. I also really did enjoy Orwell's writing. It's some good stuff. That does not mean I completely idolize Orwell and try to emulate him in every possible way. Get over it, folks. I am not actually Orwell, I am a roughly 5'11" Scots-Irish kid from the Midwest who goes to school for microbiology. Is that so confusing? If I could change my name to something else, I would. But I can't, so people here will just have to learn that an online handle is not that person's true identity.

It's Down and out in Paris and London to you, DentArthurDent. (Ah, now you've picked a worthy author to pay tribute to, and better yet, one that few will take so seriously) But at least I know where my towel is.

I could. But with the name, avatar, custom rank, location, and sig all wonderfully consistent in an Orwellian theme, it seems a shame to change them. If I'm going to be named Orwell, I want that to make at least a little sense, rather than being a seemingly random name.

Orwell, quit being ridiculous, by picking the name, you have consigned yourself to living out the exact same type of life as George Orwell did decades ago. Get over it! Gee whiz!

You're right, of course, and I'm just being silly. That's why your choice of name was so much wiser than mine (or should I say, so much awesomer). By virtue of the name you've chosen for an online forum, you have predestined yourself for glory and awesomeness.

Also Scottish and Irish, which are allegedly different from Scots-Irish. I'm also part Italian, if that makes it any better. I had family in the mafia back in the day.

You say you are a determinist, which I dont doubt. But you also acknowledge that uncertainy *exists*. If there is determinism then How can uncertainty exists and WHERE does it come from?

Don't worry AG, I'll get right around to writing the dystopian novel of the minarchist state where taxes are low and effective police forces keep crime rates down.

Wait, what? I'm not sure what you're asking.

Many people have written on the subject of the glass paperwieght and what it symbolises, when you wrote 1984 what did you intend the reader to infer regarding the paperweight

Very true.

People will always try to tell you what to think and how to act, but if your true to yourself youll be ok.

Just because your username is Orwell dose not mean you have to share all the views he did. You don't have to share any of his views. its your choice to believe in something , or not believe in something.

People may get confused by it but if you put somthing about this in your sig might help avoid confusion.

But then thats your choice
