I'm reading this book by Keith Thompson called, "Angels and Aliens, Ufo's and the Mythic Imagination". In it, the author speculates that aliens are gods or spirits that have changed form to enter our consciousness again. Monotheism has destroyed our connection to the spirit world and this is a way for them to present themselves again.

What do you think of this idea?

To me it makes more sense than grey little men in flying saucers coming down every now and then and never really making themselves truly visible to all. In order to evolve human consciousness to a level where we are connected to the source of creation, we need to move beyond the materialist ideology.

One more thing I'd like to add...I'm so sick of people thinking I'm nuts for seeing angels.
So many people go around believing in God and that is considered normal as long as you don't really believe that invisible spirits really exist. That is so lame. If you really believe in God then don't you want to figure it all out and not just be on faith automode all the time? If you don't believe that energy can exist without a physical form, then I just don't know what else to say to you.

The obvious problem with angels is that they are not aerodynamic. Anything that flies with wings has to have a particular musculature which basically makes them look like birds, not people with wings. And, of course, if you think they are actually insubstantial spirits, they don't need wings at all to fly. It's a problem in physiological design.

Most people who believe in God are not mystics, seers, and oracles. They are considered normal by psychological standards. More people believe that aliens exist than those who believe in God. These people are usually considered normal by psychological standards as well.

As long as both of these groups don't claim to have first hand experience with their beliefs, then their sanity is not questioned. Most of these people do not claim to have first hand experience with either one of these beliefs. They simply follow the beliefs of others. Think for yourself.

Nowhere was this claimed, read what is written. There is also no claim that i believe psychotics to be in any way ill either. I think there are things to be learned from people who have these experiences, wether they are to be believed as real or not.

I dislike the thought of a nameless "God" but thats a different thread.

The world is full of possibilities and probabilities. Reality is not determined by popular consent - at least my reality is not. I choose my co-believers with extreme care and even then I have some strict standards as to how to test the probability of their professed beliefs. There is a reasonable possibility of alien life in a universe this large. Using the standards I depend upon to keep my balance on icy streets and avoid getting hit by traffic when I cross the street the probability of angels, devils, and a pervading intelligent creator of the universe is zip, null, zero, absolutely NO. But of course, we each have our own standards and just watch yourself in wintertime.

I also agree that the mystics and seers of the past are the psychotics of today. Sorry for being defensive, but I assumed you were speaking like the majority of the monotheistic cult like thinkers.

This is not too far off topic because the idea of the book is that some people have their minds expanded through spiritual or ufo experiences. Imagine if you were abducted by an alien or saw an angel or ghost. It would be hard to assimilate it into the modern view of reality. I think people wouldn't be driven to such psychotic states if they weren't so out of touch with the spiritual world.

It is thought that experiences like these are not desirable to maintain the status quo, which is why stubstances that induce artificial psychotic episodes( shamanism ) are illegal. Forcing such religious visions were common place not that long into the past.

I assure you that once I had been abducted by a blue skinned big eyed alien that probed my sexual organs with tiny knives and injected a chocolate ice cream soda into my testicles to reproduce tentacled monsters instead of insane normal human progeny I would quickly become a born again Christian that rabidly followed popular astrological newspaper columns and praised the adventures of G.W.Bush as president.

I agree with you Mindtear.
Salvia Divinorum is not illegal though. It's a shame it's not used more and used with proper reverence.

Sand, you said it seems probable that there are other life forms out there in the universe.
Have you ever considered that the universe may be inhabited by life forms that are unlike what we perceive as belonging to our reality?

It seems probable to me that there are different forms of life besides the earth animals as we know it and that they already reside in this huge universe.

If you have any comprehension of the nature of life you realize it adapts to local conditions. It is improbable that conditions on other planets with life exactly match those on Earth so life there will conform to those conditions. Your reality is obviously so out of sync with mine. I doubt we can have any rational discussion on the matter.

So, you think it's accurate to take our current Western knowledge of natural law, which is based on how the earth operates, and apply it to the entire universe?

I guess we won't be able to have a rational discussion about this.

This is not a scientific discussion, its an esoterical one. Scientific method does not apply here.

Well, as long as we're getting rid of clear logical thinking, I think it's time I counted myself out.
