I think the question is summed up in a music video from some 47 years ago.
The man in the video was perhaps the quintessential hippy, and the lyrics proposed that there should be no property.
However, in the video is staged in a location that is clearly at odds with the message.
Here is an excerpt from the song:
Quote:
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
The video was filmed in the beautiful white house called Tittenhurst Park. At that time the possession of John Lennon, singer.
How many people were allowed to squat there? Why did he purchase it if he believed in 'no possessions"?
In 1972 he sold the property to Ringo Starr. No possessions John? Really.
Presumably for money, another possession. Why didnt he donate it to the public?
Still later(20 years), unrelated events put lie to another claim of his:
Quote:
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
Nothing to kill for John?
in the movie Enemy at the gates, character Danilov says:
Quote:
Danilov: I've been such a fool, Vassili. Man will always be a man. There is no new man. We tried so hard to create a society that was equal, where there'd be nothing to envy your neighbour. But there's always something to envy. A smile, a friendship, something you don't have and want to appropriate. In this world, even a Soviet one, there will always be rich and poor. Rich in gifts, poor in gifts. Rich in love, poor in love.
John Lennon spoke from a position of privilege and luxury. He had enough in life to be satiated and could afford such wistful comments.
