I am sure that a number of posters here are familiar with the pirate song:

Lyrics (found here: http://www.1musiclyrics.net/l/lazytown/ ... irate.html ):

Do what you want, ‘cause a pirate is free,
YOU ARE A PIRATE!
Yar har, fiddle di dee,
Being a pirate is alright to be,
Do what you want ‘cause a pirate is free,
You are a pirate!

(spoken)You are a pirate!
(crowd)Yay!

We've got us a map, (a map!)
To lead us to a hidden box,
That's all locked up with locks! (with locks!)
And buried deep away!

We'll dig up the box, (the box!)
We know it's full of precious booty!
Burst open the locks!
And then we'll say hooray!

(changes to electronic euro-pop crap music)

(girl's voice)Yar, har, fiddle di dee.
If you love to sail the sea,
You are a pirate!

(spoken)Weigh anchooor!

Yar har, fiddle di dee,
Being a pirate is alright with me!
Do what you want '‘cause a pirate is free,
You are a pirate!
Arr yarr, ahoy and avast,
dinky-dink-dink-a-dinkadefast!
Hang the black flag
At the end of the mast!
You are a pirate!

Hahaha! (Yay!)

We're sailing away (set sail!),
Adventure awaits on every shore!
We set sail and explore (ya-har!)
And run and jump all day (Yay!)
We float on our boat (the boat!)
Until its time to drop the anchor,
Then hang up our coats (aye-aye!)
Until we sail again!

(girl's voice)Yar, har, fiddle di dee.
If you love to sail the sea,
You are a pirate!

Laaaand ho!

Yar har, fiddle di dee,
Being a pirate is alright with me!
Do what you want ‘cause a pirate is free,
You are a pirate!

(spoken)Yar har, wind at your back, lads,
Wherever you go!

(singing)Blue sky above and blue ocean below,
You are a pirate!

(spoken)Hahahahaa!
You're a pirate!

One thing that quickly comes to mind is that this song tells others that they are pirates and that pirates can do whatever they want:
"Do what you want '‘cause a pirate is free,
You are a pirate!"

This clearly undermines civic values that are useful for maintaining society though, as people clearly often want to do things that are damaging to society. This also will make the children listening to the song less manageable for their parents. As well, pirates are criminals, and telling children at an early age that they are criminals seems likely to damage their self-esteem and lead to self-destructive behavior later in life as they try to live out this criminal image.

Within the pirate song, there are also clear errors in logical reasoning:
"If you love to sail the sea,
You are a pirate!"

As it does not follow that a person who loves to sail the sea is necessarily a pirate though, as many people sail the seas, such as the sailors that pirates rob. Introducing problematic reasoning like this early on in life seems like it could lead to poor reasoning later on in life, as people will deduce logical ideas on a flimsy basis, such as those used in the song lyrics.

Questionable areas in the song also are with the fact that the map where a chest is dug up seems to gloss over the original source of this chest, which is robbery and extortion. This can undermine knowledge about the problems that pirate actions hold for society, which can further cause young people to overly identify with the criminal element of society.

I might also question the claims that a "pirate is free" given that pirates were criminals that were in much danger of being killed by legal officials and were under pressure to do well enough to maintain their lifestyles, however, it does carry a bit of truth in that pirates tended to have a much more meritocratic and egalitarian society than was common at the time(assuming earlier pirates rather than later Somalian pirates, although this might still hold true for them, and given that Somalia has little to no government, they might actually have a greater level of freedom).

Because of these facts, I would recommend that the pirate song be banned, and all copies of it burned, for the sake of society's welfare and the good of mankind.

Thoughts? Further analysis? Other observations about pirates, both modern and past?

Actually, ( keeps straight face for duration ), the song doesn't "sell" criminal behaviour, ( robbery, extortion, murder , etc ), it "sells", pushes the value of, the idea/belief in "freedom".

"Everybody" wants adventure, money, etc, and most people love the seaside/sea, blue skies, so just like ads/commercials don't only sell the product but also the lifestyle of the people presented in the ad, ( clear gender roles, heterosexuality, lots of friends, etc ), so this song doesn't just sell a "pirate", capitalist marauder mentality, but also a belief in free will/the "free" individual, which is so necessary for rampant capitalism.

It suggests that if you "buy" the ostensible product, the pirate mentality and activity, you will achieve this "super" product aswell, ( freedom ). The two reinforce each other, as an ad for hair gel sells gel and, generally, heterosexuality. Do one and you'll get the other, yes, but by saying you'll get the boy/girlfriend if you use the gel, it tells you that heterosexuality is "good"/worth having.

1) Mixing live action and claymation is cheesy, and should be avoided.
2) The girl with pink hair is kind of creepy, and not a very good dancer.
3) What the hell is the deal with the balloon swords?
4) The song misrepresents the pirate culture by perpetuating the myth that pirates were in search of hidden buried treasure, rather than attacking people and doing the whole "pillage and plunder" thing. This obscures the morality surrounding piracy, as people feel less qualms about finding hidden treasure than they do about killing people and then robbing them.
5) The pirate's parrot is alternately present and absent. Why?
6) Why does he assert "you are a pirate?" I am not a pirate, and I have never illegally downloaded any software or music. I find such an accusation against anyone watching the video insulting.
7) There were no references to AG at all, which means the video has no redeeming value.

Or the Keel hauling of kittens. So obviously this has no historical accuracy at all

As a devout Marxist I believe this is a conspiracy of my third largest enemy Anarchists  to turn the minds of young revolutionists and therefore the cast and crew of this shameful video should be sent to the salt mines forthwith

It's good to have a fitting song to play in the background while searching for torrent files.

It's obviously one of Satan's attempts to lure people over to the dark side. It scares the hell out of me, at least.

I've seen this before, it's on Noggin; which is a TV network geared to pre-schoolers...;) I wouldn't give it that much credence, even though they start shows with statements like 'this show promotes precongnitive dissonance and clarvoiant paranoia"...;)

Yes indeed....since I was taought that a pirate's way of life...was a way to be (at least freedom wise) to steal and not conform to society's standards...just like those damn Gypsies!....

Anyway, I still long to live onto the sea like Spunge Bob!

I consider this song to be a huge threat to society.
1. "Lazytown" is made by Icelanders, and Iceland is just a nation full of semi-inbred vikings. They're trying to turn our children into savages like them.
2. They're encouraging our children to dye their hair in unnatural, heathenistic colours like pink.
3. They're encouraging our children to use foul language like "yar har fiddle dee dee"
4. The animation is too bright, and will give kids ADHD, or some other disease like Asperger's Syndrome.
